From the Principal
Hi everyone
As we approach the end of Term 2, I want to remind everyone about some exciting events and important updates:
Final Day of Term: Sports Day - Friday, 21 June
Our final day of the term will be celebrated with a fantastic Sports Day! We warmly welcome parents and families to come and be spectators. It’s a wonderful way to end the term on a high note, supporting our students as they participate in various events.
Please be mindful of the following:
- Maintain a safe distance from all events for the safety of our participants.
- Refrain from photographing other children to respect everyone's privacy.
Winter Solstice Working Bee and School Community Evening - Saturday, 15 June
Join us this Saturday, 15 June, for the Winter Solstice Working Bee and School Community Evening, hosted by our hard-working P&C. This event promises great fun in a relaxed atmosphere where family and friends can engage and contribute to our school community.
We appreciate your support and participation. Every bit of work helps in providing a great learning environment for our students.
Prep Enrolments for 2025
Prep enrolments for 2025 are now open! If you have a child who will be of prep age in 2025, we urge you to register your interest as soon as possible.

NAIDOC Week
National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.
Each year a poster competition is held for NAIDOC week. The winner of the 2024 National NAIDOC Week Poster titled Urapun Muy is artist Deb Beylea.
The Brisbane City Council are running NAIDOC Week: Aboriginal Art and Cultural workshop on Sunday the 7th July, from 2:00pm to 3:00pm at Karawatha Forest Park. Please check the link for details if you are interested in taking your child/ren.
Emailing Student Reports
Just a reminder that student reports will be emailed this Friday, the 14th June, after 3pm. Please check that your email address is correct with the school office, particularly if you have made any changes in the past six months or are new to Buranda SS. If you have not received your student’s report on the evening of Friday the 14th June, please check your spam email. If the report email is not there, please email admin@burandass.eq.edu.au and we will ensure that your student’s report is sent, when school returns the following week.
Parent Teacher Interviews
From now until the holidays parent teacher interviews will be held. This short interview time is for teachers to share student progress in semester 1, 2024. This may bring up other issues which require further reflection and longer discussions with your child’s teacher. If this occurs, please make arrangements for a future appointment time with your child’s teacher, to keep the interview process efficient and manageable for everyone.
Remember, primary school assessment and reporting is an opportunity for everyone to understand a student’s achievements and celebrate successes and to identify areas for support, future practice and learning. I would encourage everyone to remain curious, stay engaged and keep learning.

Nurturing the Warriors of Tomorrow
As you navigate the journey of parenthood, it’s important to reflect on your expectations for your children. Remember, every child is unique, possessing their own set of strengths. Make these strengths your focus, rather than their weaknesses.
When we reward children for their grades, we inadvertently communicate what we value most. Instead, let’s shift our focus to who they are becoming as individuals. Their character, their kindness, their resilience - these are the qualities that truly define them.
Children, in their quest to meet our expectations, may fear disappointing us. This fear can lead to avoidance and a paralysing fear of failure. It’s crucial to remind them that it’s okay to try and fail. Failure is not a setback, but a stepping stone to success.
Encourage your children to challenge their doubtful thoughts. Reinforce the belief that they are capable of achieving their goals. Let them know that they are warriors, ready to conquer anything they set their minds to.
Let’s nurture our children’s strengths, foster their character, and empower them to face challenges head-on. After all, they are not just our children, but the warriors of tomorrow.
As we navigate this journey of parenthood, it’s crucial to remember that our actions and words significantly influence our children’s behaviour. Here are some insights to consider:
- Embrace Imperfections: It’s natural for children to make mistakes. Instead of rushing to their defence, guide them towards understanding their missteps. This approach fosters resilience and problem-solving skills.
- Promote Communication: Engage in regular conversations with your children. This practice not only enhances their language skills but also equips them with the ability to express themselves effectively, a vital skill in managing life’s ups and downs.
- Model Respect: Avoid speaking negatively about others in your children’s presence. They often interpret such behaviour as a green light to disrespect others.
- Encourage Bravery: Show your children how to face challenges head-on. Your courage can inspire them to step out of their comfort zones and tackle difficulties with confidence.
- Demonstrate Compassion: Be kind to yourself and others. Your compassionate actions can motivate your children to cultivate empathy and kindness in their own lives.
Remember, our actions can significantly shape our children’s future. Let’s strive to be the best role models we can be!
Enjoy your children over the coming break.

This is a great annual event and lots of fun for the kids and whole family.

Sports Day sausage sizzle and home bake sale
We are running a sausage sizzle and home bake sale at First Lunch (11am) on Sports Day, Friday 21 June (there won’t be tuckshop that day).
You can order sausages on Qkr! next week.
Give your kids some $1 coins for the home bake sale (each item will be $1). Yes, this is a “cash only” sale (just when you thought “cash only” was extinct).
We ask for donations of baked goods to be sold at the stall. Slices/cupcakes/cakes/jelly cups in house colours etc. Nothing containing nuts and no goods that haven’t been home baked please. Some gluten free and vegan options are appreciated (please label them clearly). Please include a list of ingredients if possible.
Donations are to be taken directly to the bake sale table in the under cover area near the oval from 8.30am on the day.
Containers should have a student name and class clearly visible and need to be collected on the day, or they will be swallowed by the dreaded Tupperware Monster that lives in the tuckshop.
