Newsletter No 20 29 November 2023
From the Principal
Hi Everyone
This is the final regular newsletter of the year. Thank you for your co-operation and flexibility throughout the year. It has been a really challenging year. I appreciate the support you have provided.
I’d like to take the opportunity to thank our entire staff for their work this year (teachers, teacher aides, administration, cleaners, support staff and our groundsman). This is a great school and our staff work so hard to make it that way.
We say farewell to Ms Cherie Patton and Mrs Zoe Wragg. Cherie and Zoe have decided to move on from the Department of Education. They have both been exceptional teachers at Buranda SS. I wish them all the very best in the future.
My thanks also to Ms Spencer who is moving on at the end of this year. My thanks to Whitney for teaching year 1/2B this year. Best wishes for the future.
I will publish full details of classes and staffing early next week. I am finalising arrangements with our Regional HR team this week.
There is a P&C meeting in the library at 6:15pm next Wednesday 6 December. Chris and the P&C executive have charged on in 2023. We are very grateful for your continued support. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered this year through the tuckshop (thank you Cass) and school events. It has been a big year. Thank you Ludivine for running the uniform shop (check out the new shop) and ice-block days. Thanks also to the parent classroom volunteers who were able to join our classrooms again this year.
To our year 6 cohort we say farewell and good luck for your future endeavours. May you do great things. There are many families leaving Buranda next Friday - many of our year 6 families have been with us for a long time. My sincere thanks to you all for your contribution to this school over the years -it's more than a decade in some cases.
I thank you all for the contributions you’ve made through your advocacy, volunteering and interest in your children’s education and school community. Many of you have spent many, many hours at P&C meetings and school events. You leave this school in great shape.
Report cards will be emailed out on Wednesday 6 December.
Class lists will be emailed on Thursday 7 December after 3pm.
A reminder for Term 1 2024, all state school students must keep their mobile phones switched off and ‘away for the day’ during school hours.
Year 6 Graduation is on Monday 4 December in the hall - 5:45pm for a 6pm commencement.
Final assembly is next Tuesday 5 December at 2:00pm this will take place in the hall. Invitations to parents of all Award Winners have been emailed.
Year 6 parents are invited to attend the ringing of the bell tradition at 2.50pm on Tuesday 5 December. I ask year 6 parents to wait on the grassed area in front of the bell.
Swimming carnival:
Junior carnival, Tuesday 5 December first session and possibly second session if needed.
Senior carnival, Wednesday 6 December first and second session
Parents are unable to attend the swimming carnivals due to limited space in the pool area.
Music Concert:
The music concert is Thursday 7 December in the hall at 1:45pm. My thanks to our Music teacher Ms Tafra for organising this great end of year event.
Thanks to our P&C for organising the Free Sausage Sizzle BBQ and fruit for first break. Free ice-blocks will be handed out in second break on Friday 8 December. Year 6s will assist with the handing out of ice-blocks to students during the second break.
We need volunteers to assist with the BBQ - please email pandc@burandasspandc.org.au if you can help during the morning.
There will be some early works for the Martin St development over the holidays - I will provide an overview of these works at the P&C meeting next week . Most of the work during the holidays will be site establishment and a storage facility for the hall. OSHC will move into the hall temporarily from next year - so that additional refurbishment of A block can occur. I expect disruption to be minimal. I will provide a full overview by email next week after the P&C meeting.
A reminder that the last day of school in 2023 is Friday 8 December. The first day back in 2024 is Monday 22 January.
All the best for the Christmas and New Year period. Enjoy the break with your family and friends.
Have a great week.
Kind regards
Simon Vaseo - Principal
Head lice
Head lice have been detected in the school.
It is extremely important for you to check your child’s head for head lice and/or eggs TODAY. Keep checking every 2 days until there are no head lice found for 10 consecutive days.
If you do find head lice and/or eggs, commence effective treatment immediately and be sure to complete the process of treatment. This will help prevent head lice from spreading. Teachers will reduce head-to-head contact activities while head lice are known to be around.
If for any reason you are having difficulties treating the head lice on your child effectively, please contact the school on 3435 1222.

Swimming Carnivals
Our annual swimming carnivals will be held over two days next week.
Tuesday 5 December
- Junior Carnival Yr 1 - 3 9 am -11 am
- Prep Carnival 11.45 am - 1.15 pm
Wednesday 6 December
- Senior Carnival 9 am - 1.15 pm
Children will be required to bring two towels (one to sit on) and their regular swimming gear including a sun shirt and bathing cap. Events are not compulsory and the children choose which events they want to enter. We do however, encourage all students to compete in some capacity.
As space is limited at our pool enclosure, unfortunately the carnivals are closed to spectators.

Design Technology
This week we concluded our Design Technology units and the children have produced some amazing work. On Friday 1 December we will be holding a Design Technology Expo in our Resource Centre displaying work from Prep to Year 6. Classes have a scheduled time slot to visit throughout the day to see what other grades have been working on.
The centre will be open to parents from 2.30 pm -3 pm this Friday if you would like to have a look at what the classes have produced throughout the semester.
