From the Principal
Hi Everyone
Greetings from beautiful Maroon Outdoor Education Centre. We will return from camp on Friday afternoon between 2.30pm - 3.00pm depending on traffic.
Please be reminded that school begins at 8.55am, students are able to 'Walk and Talk' with limited supervision from 8.30am. There is no supervision for students before 8.30am. Students who are at school before 8.30am need to be booked into before school care.
The staff car park in not to be used by parents who are either dropping off or collecting students during school time, the closest car park is Gladys Street, behind the Stones Corner Library.
Please remember that students are not to bring medication to school in their bags.
If your child has a medical condition that requires staff to administer medication, parents must complete a form at the office.
Please note, school staff will only administer medication that:
- has been prescribed by a qualified health practitioner - e.g. doctor, dentist
- is in its original container, and
- has an attached pharmacy label.
We are unable to adminster medication that you can buy over the counter such as paracetamol, eye drops, cough syrup unless it has been prescribed by your childs qualified health practitioner.
Please ensure your child’s medication has not expired before handing it in to the office. Parents are responsible for ensuring all medical information is up to date.
Last Friday a select number of students attended the Budgie Cup soccer at Coorparoo Secondary College. Congratulations to all of out students for their participation in great Buranda spirit. We are proud of you all. My thanks to Mr Higgins, Ms Walters, Miss Coutts and Mr Shanks for their attendance at the cup. Finally, what a magnificent ride the Matilda's provided our nation, it was an amazing tournament. Have a great week.

From the Music Room
This week I am featuring our work in the Prep/1 and Year 2/3 music classrooms.
The Prep/1 students have been working on showing the rhythm and so and mi notes of a song using paddlepop sticks and felt boards. This forms foundations for formal music notation they will use as they progress through school. They have also been exploring percussion instruments and learning to play together as an ensemble.
The Year 2/3 students have been learning about time signatures and how to conduct with different meters. They have also been studying string instruments and playing listening games to see who can correctly select the instrument they hear.
This fortnight in a lot of classes we have been talking about how musicians work as a team and have been building up our class culture, taking lots of inspiration from the Matildas!

Book week
Have you got a book ready and a costume sorted? Our Book Week celebration is coming up next week!
This year we will be celebrating Book Week on Thursday 31 August by participating in Elsie’s Book Club. This is a charity founded by Ms Warhurst in honour of her daughter, Elsie, who passed away last year at only seven days old. This August would have been Elsie’s first birthday and marks one year of Ms Warhurst living without her.
Students and staff are invited to bring in a picture book to donate to Elsie’s Book Club and to “dress up for Elsie”, dressing as their favourite character from a book. Staff members or students who do not feel comfortable dressing up are invited to wear pink to school on this day instead to show their support.
How to Donate a Book
1. Choose a picture book that your child loved as a baby or let them choose a book they think would be good for Elsie’s Book Club.
2. Purchase a new copy of this book from a bookstore (NB: As these books are donated to Neonatal Intensive Care Units it’s essential that they are newly purchased books to limit the spread of germs)
3. Wrap the book or keep it in a plastic bag to protect it from picking up any extra germs on its way to hospital.
4. Bring the book to school on Thursday 31 August and place it in the box at the bottom of the music room stairs in its bag/wrapping.
5. Your book will be delivered to an Australian Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for parents of premature or unwell babies to read to their child while they are in hospital, supporting their connection at a time when they may not be able to hold them.
You can read more about Elsie’s Book Club here.
How to Dress Up for Book Week
1. Think about this year’s Book Week theme, “Read, Grow, Inspire” and choose a book you think works well with this theme.
2. Get creative and put together a costume to dress up as a character from the book. You could buy a costume or make a costume. Op shops are great for piecing things together!
3. On Thursday 31 August, come to school dressed as your Book Week character.
4. At 8.45am join the school in front of the flag posts for a Book Week photo in your costume.

Colour Run
Thanks to parents who volunteered to help with the Colour Run but no one stepped forward to take charge of the overall coordination of it, so we are not going to proceed with it as proposed on 8 September. We still think this is a good idea for the future and will consider it again next year.
Tuckshop
Tuckshop this Friday, 25 August, has options for first and second break.
Remember to place your orders on Qkr by 8pm tonight.
Next week’s tuckshop will run on Thursday 31 August, as Friday 1 September is a pupil free day. The menu will be Book Week themed and instead of muffins we will be doing cupcakes. All the proceeds from the cupcakes will be donated to It's from Elsie, the charity established by Ms Warhurst to purchase and donate children’s picture books to Australian Neonatal Intensive Care Units.
The tuckshop still needs volunteers if it is to keep running each week. You can sign up in 3 easy steps:
1) Click this link to see our SignUp on SignUp: https://signup.com/go/DsjgPso
2) Review the options listed and choose the spot(s) you like.
3) Sign up! It's Easy - you will NOT need to register an account or keep a password on SignUp.
