Newsletter 5 May - Week 3 Term 2
Message from the Principal
Hi everyone
Please see information from our Head of Curriculum regarding the NAPLAN testing schedule next week. Students year 3&5 only.
Selected students in year 4-6 are in training for the Budgie Cup (touch football) Carnival on Friday 11 June. Training sessions are held on Friday afternoons in the last session.
The weather is still impacting on the completion of our Outdoor Learning Area upgrade. Planting and a few other final touches are scheduled to be completed this week.
I have included a link -creating and maintaining respectful school communities. There is a download with advice around resolving issues at school too.
The Queensland Government is committed to tackling the growing issue of violent and abusive behaviour across school communities. The Respect our staff, respect our school campaign aims to create safer and more respectful communities across Queensland state schools.
We all have different beliefs, expectations and experiences, so there are inevitably going to be times where conflicts or disagreements occur in schools. How we handle those conflicts can make a significant difference to the learning and development of our students and the positive environments we aim to foster.
The safety of our students and staff is the number one priority and we can all play our part in ensuring that our schools are safe and respectful places to be. Violent or abusive behaviour will not be tolerated in our schools. It's not just a courtesy. It's the law

This month's theme is all about reflecting on what gives our life meaning. Being a part of something bigger than ourselves and focusing on things that we value is key to our wellbeing. I thought you might like to use the calendars with your children and share them with your broader networks.

NAPLAN Test Dates
NAPLAN test dates are as follows for Years 3 and 5 students.
Day 1 Tuesday 11th May 2021 | Day 2 Wednesday 12th May 2021 | Day 3 Thursday 13th May 2021 | |
Year 3 | Morning Session - Language conventions: 45 minutes Middle Session - Writing: 40 minutes | Morning Session - Reading: 45 minutes | Morning Session - Numeracy: 45 minutes |
Year 5 | Morning Session - Language conventions: 45 minutes Middle Session - Writing: 40 minutes | Morning Session - Reading: 50 minutes | Morning Session - Numeracy: 50 minutes |
Remember, NAPLAN will give each student a comparison of their progress in the testing areas against all students at that grade level across Australia as it is a national test. NAPLAN is not however, high stakes testing as there are no positive or negative consequences for students from sitting the tests. We encourage the students to have a go and try their best, as we do with all their schoolwork. Naturally, some students get excited and/or anxious about doing a test. The best preparation for the tests is a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast on the morning of the tests. This link will take you to some test taking tips that might help you prepare your child for the tests.

Information about NAPLAN is open access to parents at the following link https://www.nap.edu.au/
Parent Withdrawal from NAPLAN
Parents may for various reasons wish to withdraw their child/ren from participating in one or all of the NAPLAN tests. If this applies to you or your child please see me or Mr Vaseo for a parent withdrawal form which must be signed and submitted to the principal prior to the administration of the tests.

Parent Tip 4
Dig deeper into the story
Ask your child 2 questions about the story you've just read. Say something like,
"Why do you think the main character did that?"
“How is the character feeling?” (dig deeper than just sad or happy) Why?
“Which events could not have really happened? Why?”
“What is the author trying to tell us?” Why did the author write this?”
“Why do you think the author bolded (or changed the font) at that part of the story?

From the Tuckshop
Dear parents,
Welcome to May and big hugs to all mums out there.
Please note that the Qkr! menu now has 2 offerings:
1st Break Options
This week our tuckshop is offering a delicious Chicken or Veggie Curry. The curries will be prepared considering the delicate palate of our children, therefore very mild. For the chilli lovers, we will have chilli flakes on the side as optional.
As always, we are catering for a variety of dietary restrictions. Note that this week both options (chicken and vegetarian) are naturally gluten free, however vegan and dairy free options can be prepared under request.
Fruit cups will have a mix of 3 seasonal fruits. This week's possible combinations include apples, grapes, mandarins and pears.
Cookies and muffins are the 'baked items of the day" which are also available for 2nd break. If you want your child to have a cookie only at 2nd break, please do not add to 1st break. We are delivering 2nd break options to the classrooms before 2nd break.
Second Break Snacks
Second break snacks were a fabulous surprise last week. This offering includes the 'baked item of the day', savoury snacks, fruits, veggies and drinks - which meet QLD Smart Choices Tuckshop guidelines. 2nd break items will be delivered to classrooms before second break.
Check these out on your Qkr! menu as in the pic below.
VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED!
We can only run a Tuckshop because we have our amazing, wonderful volunteers .
But more volunteers are needed, there's so much to do, please help us!
As a volunteer your job may include chopping veggies and fruits, loading/emptying the dishwasher, tasting food, serving children, etc. If you don't like cooking you don't have to. Only one hour of your time is a much-needed amazing contribution.
It's a great way to meet other parents and contribute to our school community... we simply cannot do it without volunteers.
We are currently working on Thursdays and Fridays.
Check our Volunteer Link https://signup.com/go/rqwpybE
Ice blocks
Ice blocks are every Thursday and can be ordered through the Qkr! app. New cards are to be collected from the tuckshop unless the children are in Prep - teachers will hold their cards. New cards must be purchased by 5pm on Tuesday. Please contact Ludivine on ludivinedr@hotmail.com if you have any issues.
