Newsletter No 7 3rd of May 2023
From the Principal
Today, we had our school photos taken, thank you for presenting students in their uniforms.
Just a reminder that we have a P&C meeting tonight at 6:15 pm in the library. Everyone is welcome to attend and hear about upcoming events and fundraising activities.
I will be providing an update on the development of the Martin Street site next week. There’s a meeting with the program group tomorrow.
Unfortunately, I have been away sick for the past two days, but I am looking forward to returning later this week. I want to thank the teachers and staff for ensuring that everything ran smoothly in my absence.
Have a great week.
Simon Vaseo - Principal

From the Music Room
Last term I asked students across grades 2-6 to volunteer to come up with a helpful resource for us to remember the rule about stem direction when we are writing music. I am very grateful to Harriet, Eva and Milan who collaborated on this poster which we now have displayed in the music room and can refer to when we are practicing notation. Well done, girls, and thank you for your efforts!
Big congratulations also to the choir who sang beautifully at the ANZAC assembly. We are looking forward to getting into some different repertoire now including, yes, the coveted territory of pop music! New choir members are welcome at any time.
Best wishes,
Ms Camilla Tafra - Music teacher

Becoming Allies
Were you aware that April was Autism Awareness Month? Well, rather than limiting our celebrations of learning differences to April and Autism, I thought we’d celebrate all neurodiverse individuals all of the time. Did you know that 15 – 20% of our population is neurodiverse. That’s 1 in 5 people, or at least 50 students in our school.
One of the main reasons for celebrating neurodiversity, rather than focussing on one particular learning difference, is because most neurodiverse people will have more than one learning variability. Autistic people can often have one or more of the following differences as part of their Autism; sensory differences, attention deficit disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and highly likely, anxiety. People with a specific learning disorder, such as Dyslexia, may have Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, ADHD, and again, highly likely, anxiety.
One of the most common disorders to co-occur with any learning difference is anxiety, and like many of the learning differences in schools, anxiety is another hidden, or invisible difference. A big contributor to anxiety, particularly for those with a learning difference, is the perceived lack of understanding and support from others.
For the rest of this year, instead of becoming Autism aware, our aim is to become Allies of the Neurodiverse. Here is a good place to start:

TUCKSHOP
We are delighted to welcome our new Tuckshop Convenor – Cass Somers – who will be starting on Friday 19 May.
Cass is a parent of two students at Buranda and has a worked for many years in hospitality roles ranging from small local cafes to large corporate canteens and hotels.
Cass will still need parent volunteers to help her each week, so we’ll keep the class allocations each week for volunteers. We’ll continue Bakery or Sushi in weeks that Cass is not available to coordinate the tuckshop.
We will have Bakery this Friday, 5 May, with orders via Qkr! Class 5H is in charge this week.
You can sign up for your class’s allocated week to help with tuckshop at this link.
P&C MEETING
We have a P&C meeting this week, Wednesday 3 May, starting promptly at 6.15pm in the school library.
If you can’t make it in person, you can join online via this Microsoft Teams link.
Amongst other things, we’ll be discussing ideas for new projects to help the school, such as a sand pit for the prep classrooms and a nature play area under the trees along the fenceline of the school oval.
If you have any ideas for P&C projects you think would improve the school, please join us.
FIRST FRIDAY CLUB - this week
The First Friday Club will be running this Friday 5 May, in Hanlon Park after school.
All students, parents and carers are welcome to join us. All students must be supervised by a parent.
Warm regards,
Chris McGrath - P&C President
