Newsletter No 5 22 March 2023
From the Principal
Hi everyone
This is the final newsletter for term 1. Next Friday 31 March is the final day of term. School will resume after the Easter Break on Monday 17 April.
Thanks to out students in year 3 & 5 who completed NAPLAN testing last week. My thanks also to our supervising staff. NAPLAN testing has been moved to term 1 from this year but everyone managed the change well.
Please remember to check the lost property before the end of the term. There’s quite a bit of swimming gear as well as the regular hats, drink bottles, lunch boxes etc.
We wish year 1/2B teacher Tara Border all the best for her maternity leave from term 2.
Ms Border will be replaced for the remainder of the 2023 year by Miss Whitey Spencer- who has done a number of contracts for us.
Tracy Allan Administration Assistant will be on leave next term.
I wish you and your family all the best for the end of term 1 break. Relax and stay safe.
Have a great week.

The Reboot 5 Faces
Are you using them at home? Try some of these questions before you leave the house in the morning:
Are you ready for the day? What number are you? OR How are you feeling today?
Then if needed:
What do you need to feel better? OR What could you do to feel better?
Followed by:
How do you feel now? OR How can I help?
A check-in before the days starts will help your child prepare for the day and feel ready to face what the day brings. It also reinforces different strategies that may assist with self-regulation and lets your child know you are there to support and help them.
Swimathon
This years Swimathon has wrapped up with an incredible, record amount of money raised, just under $10 500. I would like to thank the children who swam their hearts out, the parents, families and friends who sponsored and donated money to the event and the P&C members who have collated the information and who are making Smoothies for our highest fundraisers.
A note has been given to the top 25 fundraisers who will participant in a Smoothie and Swim session on Monday 27th March at 10.30.
Fabulous effort everyone!

From the Music Room
This term I asked students to share a way of remembering a rule in music notation that is often forgotten amongst the budding composers in our school. It was completely voluntary to enter this contest and I am grateful for the creative efforts of Harriet, Eva and Milan from 5H, and Luka and Ella from 2/3C.
The (very unexciting) rule is this: for notes that sit above the middle line on the stave, the stems go down on the left hand side. For notes that sit below the middle line on the stave, the stems go up on the right hand side. For the note on the middle line of the stave, the stem can go in either direction.
A very big congratulations to Harriet, Eva and Milan who put on a great performance sharing a way they had learnt to remember this rule. They have now eagerly accepted the task of creating a poster to depict this so we can have it in our music room to help perfect our music notation.
I have been loving my first term teaching music at Buranda and look forward to working more with the students on making and appreciating music!

By the time you get this newsletter, the Autumn Equinox for 2023 will have just passed, yesterday at 7.25am to be precise. Equinox means equal night, and this only happens twice each year, in Autumn and in Spring. There are exactly twelve hours of day and twelve hours of night on these special days.
To celebrate, we held a garden working bee and pizza party over the weekend which was a total delight. Many thanks to the brave students and parents who slogged it out in sweltering conditions to make the world a better place. After the hard work, we were all treated to the best pizzas I have ever had, made by our own fantastic chef Davida, with diligent assistance from Beth and Chu. Just wonderful, many thanks to our great P&C president Chris for organising this special event.
On the school front, the students have been busy watering, weeding, mulching and planting. The place has never looked better. Many thanks to Mr Brad for his hard work in the heat as well. Happy Equinox!

The answer is: a fish!
