From the Principal

Hi everyone

Next week students in years 3&5 will participate in NAPLAN testing on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Parents of students in years 3&5 are encouraged to visit the NAPLAN site for further information. As previously mentioned, NAPLAN testing is completed by students online (except for year 3 writing).

The test schedule next week is as follows:

Wednesday 15/3/23Thursday 16/3/23Friday 17/3/23
Writing (morning session)Reading (morning session)Numeracy (morning session

Conventions of language (middle session)

Please be mindful that parking around the school is limited. The best and safest option for parking is to use the Gladys Street public car park (under the busway). Parents can park and enter the school using this designated parking area. Please do not park in Martin Street or Cowley Street (loading zone) to enter the school. Martin Street is the designated drop-off and pick-up point. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Students routinely arriving at school prior to 8:15a.m. should be booked into before school care.

ESafety for Kids: I spoke on assembly yesterday about access to the eSafetykids web materials. I encourage you to utilise these with your children, to develop plans and habits that encourage appropriate and safe usage of digital devices at home (including online gaming). We will continue to discuss safe and appropriate use of digital devices at assembly. We will keep you up to date with other opportunities to access eSafety information.

Have a great week.

From the HOC

Hi Everyone

I want to take today as an opportunity to thank and celebrate all the fabulous women we have working with us in both paid and voluntary capacities, the women in all our lives who have made our lives today possible and the women of tomorrow who we teach every day.

Embracing equity is this year's theme for International Women's Day and is important to keep front and centre in our minds as we make the most of our own lives and educate everyone in the next generation.

You can find information about International Women's Day and women nominated for women of the year awards at the links below.

Queensland Rail

At Buranda State School students sometimes use the Queensland Rail network to travel to and from school, for excursions and for transportation to and from Budgie Cup.

At assembly on the 14th of March, the students will have a rail safety presentation from a Qld Rail Community Education & Engagement Officer. The presentation promotes safe behaviours on the Queensland Rail network, which takes approximately 10-15 minutes, is suitable for Prep to Yr. 6. Please ask your child/ren what they learnt about rail safety after the presentation to help reinforce the messages presented.

Queensland Rail have also been promoting information about the upgrade to Buranda Train Station. If you are interested in reading about and viewing plans for the station upgrade please click the link below.

ESafety

Building on the information I supplied about the eSafety Commissioner Resource (https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents), the Australian Federal Police have endorsed a story, ‘Jack Changes the Game’, by Tess Rowley, to assist parents to educate their children about online safety. The story is pitched at 5-8-year-old children. An online reading and an Auslan reading of the text, are available at

https://www.accce.gov.au/resources/parents-carers/jack-changes-game

There are further resources about the book for parents and carers at ThinkUKnow.org.au

Nude Food

Remember we are taking up the challenge to REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE as much waste as possible. Students can support the Grade 5s who are looking after our composting and recycling at school by bringing nude food lunches which reduce waste.

Watch the Nude Food Crew rap with your children.

https://www.abc.net.au/btn/nude-food-crew/10509804

The Brisbane City Council gives us great visual guidelines about what can be composted and recycled, through their free recycling resources for businesses, schools and community groups.

Reboot Tool: 5 Faces & Self-Regulation

Upset, angry, depressed, scared

Negative, frustrated, confused, sad

OK, fine,
alright,
average

Comfortable positive,
pleased

Excited, happy,
pumped

Self-regulation is one of the most important skills a child can develop. The capacity to know what you are feeling, what you need to feel better and respond appropriately to a life situation is a key determinant in outcomes socially, personally and at school. Being able to self-regulate is a stronger predictor of long-term school and life success than talent or natural ability. Reboot’s 5 Faces are helping our staff to co-regulate with students to build student's ability to self-regulate.

Co-regulation is the act of supporting a person to self-regulate. Everyone requires this support to develop basic skills in self-regulation, and at challenging times we all require the support of another person to self-regulate. Reboot’s 5 Faces are a simple visual tool to support young people to identify where they are at and what they need to feel better.

It is possible to feel all 5 levels of emotion in 5 minutes if enough stimulating things are happening. There is nothing wrong with being a number 1 or 2, sometimes you can’t help it (e.g. when someone you love leaves or dies, when someone betrays and upsets you) – it is acting out on it that is the problem.

With the support of Reboot, we are building skills in all our students so that they can self-regulate their behaviours and remain engaged in life and learning.

Homework for Parents & Carers

Talk to your children about their emotions – can they identify how they feel by using the 5 Faces? Do they know what they need to feel better? Assure them that you are there to support and help them feel the best they can.

Use the 5 Faces at home – be open and honest with your children when you are feeling a 1 or a 2 (they might even pick up on it before you do) and explain what you need to feel better.
