Newsletter 28 April - Week 2 Term 2
Message from the Principal
Hi everyone
Thanks to all families for sending in flowers for our ANZAC assembly and the class wreaths on Friday. It was a special part of our service. We were treated to a fantastic performance by our school choir. Lest we forget.
Please be reminded that students who require supervision/care after school should be booked into after school care. There is no school supervision after 3 pm, apart from those students being collected at Martin Street (until 3:15pm).
We have had a number of students participating in district and regional sporting events recently. Yesterday, we had a number of students attend the district cross-country event. Congratulations to all of our students, who ran well. A special mention to Lucy K. and Anice U. who will both attend the Met East Cross-Country event. Well done everyone.
In AFL, Florence and Tanina R recently played in the Met East under 12 AFL Girls Carnival in the Mount Gravatt District Team. Their team won the event and Florence was selected in the Met East Representative Team. Joe C also played in the Boys Under 12 Carnival. Joe has been selected in the Met North U12 Team, too. The Under 12 State Carnival will be held in Cairns this year. Congratulations to all 3 students, we are very proud of your achievements.
Please remember that this coming Monday is the Labour Day Public Holiday. Enjoy the long weekend.
The upgrade to the Outdoor Learning Area should be finalised this week- there are hundreds of plants to be planted today and tomorrow. We look forward to using the site very soon with our students.
3rd Party Consent Agreement
Please be reminded to complete 3rd Party Consent Agreement emailed to you from the school recently. This will enable children to access a number of websites/services that support their learning.
Have a great week.

Message from the Head of Curriculum
Confidence and Self-Esteem
We need to help children to be resilient, including when approaching tests because tests will be an ongoing part of their lives both in and out of school. Testing provides us with one source of information about ourselves. We need to keep this in perspective. This little video might help children understand and develop strategies to build their confidence and resilience so they can be lifelong learners. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdjaxS4ME2A
Practice NAPLAN Tests
The practice NAPLAN tests for Years 3 and 5 have been completed. The students were terrific with their attitude and effort towards the practice and learning some tips about not getting stuck on questions, having a go at every question and having confidence in themselves. Teachers will endeavour to mark the practice tests and give the students feedback prior to sitting the NAPLAN tests.
NAPLAN Test Dates
NAPLAN test dates are as follows for Years 3 and 5 students.
Year | Day 1 Tuesday 11th May 2021 | Day 2 Wednesday 12th May 2021 | Day 3 Thursday 13th May 2021 |
Year 3 | Morning Session - Language conventions: 45 minutes Middle Session - Writing: 40 minutes | Morning Session - Reading: 45 minutes | Morning Session - Numeracy: 45 minutes |
Year 5 | Morning Session - Language conventions: 45 minutes Middle Session - Writing: 40 minutes | Morning Session - Reading: 50 minutes | Morning Session - Numeracy: 50 minutes |
Remember, NAPLAN will give each student a comparison of their progress in the testing areas against the all students at that grade level across Australia as it is a national test. NAPLAN is not however, high stakes testing as there are no positive or negative consequences for students from sitting the tests. We encourage the students to have a go and try their best, as we do with all their schoolwork. Naturally, some students get excited and/or anxious about doing a test. The best preparation for the tests is a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast on the morning of the tests. This link will take you to some test taking tips that might help you prepare your child for the tests.

Parent Withdrawal from NAPLAN
Parents may for various reasons wish to withdraw their child/ren from participating in one or all of the NAPLAN tests. If this applies to you or your child please see me or Mr Vaseo for a parent withdrawal form which must be signed and submitted to the Principal prior to the administration of the tests.

Parent Tip #3
Once is Not Enough
Encourage your child to re-read their favourite books and home readers. Re-reading helps children read more quickly and accurately thus improving their fluency.
Use your phone to audio record their first and their last reading to compare their pace, accuracy and expression.
Scholastic Book Club
The Scholastic Book Club catalogue for Term 2 has been given out to your children. To make a purchase, go to:
scholastic.com.au/LOOP OR download the LOOP app.
Please do not send money and orders to school as they cannot be processed this way.
Orders close Monday 10 May.
Orders placed by the closing date will be delivered to school.
*Every order will earn resources and books for our school library*
Helping Hands - OSHC
A big Hello from the team here at Helping Hands Buranda,
We have had a busy holiday period with some super excursions. The Abbey Museum at Caboolture was a huge hit with archery and our own mini dig where we found so much and from so many different time periods. The next excursion was Indoor climbing where the children went up to dizzying heights and I watched with bated breath. I have attached some photos as we had such popular excursions this time.
We are filling up number wise, and I have had to turn some parents away as while I do have space, I don't necessarily have staff. If you can make bookings for the term, please do so, so I can staff adequately. Please be aware that term bookings will not roll over. We also have lots of before school care bookings, please call to make sure there is space before turning up. Currently we only have 2 staff in the mornings, and I can get another staff member, however, I need notice. Please be aware that the coordinator is always in ratio when working. This means that the children come first so if you need to talk to me about bookings, please email or text so I have it in writing. There have been a couple of instances lately where I have been attending to sick children and parents are trying to talk to me about bookings. Please know that I do my best to be available however, as I am in ratio, the children will always come first before admin tasks.

Winter Solstice
Can you help?
We are really excited to run our first event, but we need help to run the Winter Solstice in June this year! We NEED YOU. If we do not get enough volunteers, the event may not be able to go ahead. We really need an event coordinator and enough people to support this event - how it runs will be up to you, with support from your P&C (and me!)
We will be holding an online meeting to discuss this community-focused event on Thursday 29 April, 2021 (tomorrow night).
Please click this link to join the online meeting via Microsoft Teams this Thursday night from 7pm - 8pm.
