Newsletter No. 30 - 2 November 2022
From the Principal
Hi everyone
My special thanks to Laura Klein for organising the Day for Daniel last Thursday. It was a very successful activity with huge participation in the active walk and students raising $780.25 for the Morcombe Foundation. Please see further details in the newsletter. Thank you and well done everyone.
The school has been contacted numerous times by Queensland Health-Metro South regarding inappropriate use of their parking facility, by parents of our school. The public health provider has mentioned that they will be issuing fines or removing vehicles. There is also full video surveillance in the area, please do not use this area to park and bring your child/children into school. Gladys Street is the only safe and permissible place to park and enter the school via the bridge.
Congratulations to all of our Budgie Cup teams for their fine efforts at the Soccer Cup last Friday. We had a senior team in the major final and our two junior teams played off in the minor final. Special thanks to Ms Coutts, Mr Higgins, Mr Pellow, Mr Marshman and Ms Matheson for their coaching and travel assistance. Congratulations to our Best and Fairest winners.
Congratulations for Scarlett M who has been selected to sing solo at the Stellata for the Australian Girls Choir at QPAC on Saturday 5 November. Scarlett is the only girl in her age group across the whole of Brisbane to have been selected to sing solo.
Thanks to Mr Cipollone and our Senior Band for their performance for students at Narbethong Special School today.
Please get behind Mr Higgins in his Movember campaign- he’s clean shaven and already pounding the pavement.
- I'm growing my mo and running 60kms over the month to raise funds and awareness this Movember for all the dads, brothers, sons and mates in our lives. I need your help. Please donate to support men's health
There is a P&C meeting in the library at 6:15pm tonight.
Due to the recent wet weather mosquito numbers are increasing, to protect your child apply insect repellant before school they come to school, please do not send repellant to school with your child.
My thanks to the P&C for hosting a morning tea (Tuesday 8 November) for our former Business Manager -Maree Healy. Maree has worked at Buranda SS since 2007- firstly as an Administrative Officer and more recently as Small Schools Business Manager. Maree has done a great deal to progress our school in that time. As you may be aware, Maree has sadly been battling ill health through this year. Maree will officially retire from her role on December 9 this year. On behalf of our entire staff, I thank Maree for her service and contribution to Buranda State School and wish her all the very best. Please see details of the morning tea further in the newsletter.
Our groundsman Doug Barron is on leave at the moment. We welcome Brad Knight- who will replace Doug during his leave.
Have a great week.

Headlice
Head lice have been detected in the school.
It is extremely important for you to check your child’s head for head lice TODAY.
If you do find head lice, commence treatment immediately and be sure to complete the process of treatment. This will help prevent head lice from spreading.
Remember to keep checking your family member’s heads every 2 days until there are no head lice found for 10 consecutive days.
For further information regarding treating head lice, refer to the Department of Health’s Head Lice fact sheet
Your local pharmacist can provide advice regarding head lice treatment options and head lice combs.
Because head lice need close head-to-head contact to spread from one person to another, to reduce the spread of head lice, teachers will discourage students from activities which may involve head to head contact.
To reduce your child’s risk of getting head lice, make sure that long hair is tied up and discourage children from sharing their brushes and combs and having head to head contact with others.
Remember - Anyone can get head lice – they have no preferences for cleanliness, hair colour, hair type, ethnicity or age.
P&C Update
P&C meeting tonight
The monthly P&C meeting will be held tonight at 6.15pm in the school library.
For those who can't attend in person, please join us online at this Microsoft Teams link.
First Friday Club this week
This Friday 4 November 2022 we are holding a First Friday Club in Hanlon Park after school. All parents and children are welcome (see Flyer below).
Sushi Friday
We are running another Sushi Friday this week (on Friday 4 November). You will be able to order sushi for this week on Qkr! until 10pm on Wednesday 2 November.
We need a few parents each week to help Sushi Fridays, which normally only takes around one hour (as the sushi is delivered pre-made and parents simply help distribute it). Please help us by signing up to volunteer in a week that suits you at this link.
Parent volunteers are a must to keep Sushi Fridays going. It is a nice way to meet other parents and be involved in the school.
If your child is absent and you have ordered tuckshop for them you, you are able to cancel their order until 10am on tuckshop day, following the steps below:
* Log onto Qkr!
* Select the Activity tab
* Select the receipt for your sushi purchase for the date ordered and cancel order
You will receive and automatic refund.
Please do not contact the office regarding tuckshop orders.

Morning tea for Maree Healy
We are holding a morning tea to thank Maree Healy for her many years of service to the school. She left the school so quickly earlier this year and would like to say goodbye to parents and children.
The morning tea will be held on Tuesday 8 November at 11am at the flag pole and then in the school hall. Please bring a plate to share.
Rather than gifts, Maree has asked for anyone who wishes to donate to a charity that has helped her greatly, Peace of Mind.
The P&C expresses its gratitude to Maree for her service and support for the school community. For many parents, she was the first person at the school they met and were welcomed by.

"Day for Daniel" update
Thank you for supporting D4D. We had over 100 parents, children and dogs join the “Safe Walk for Daniel” through Hanlon Park.
Students viewed the 2022 Safety Lesson created by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation and discussed their “Safety Network” and strategies for keeping safe at home, in the community and online. Classes created a safety mural with coins, and raised $780.25 for the DM Foundation. Big thanks to Rock’N’Roll Deli for donating “red fruit” for all students to enjoy.
