From the Principal
Hi everyone,
This week is School Support Staff recognition week- Administration Officers, Business Manager, Groundsman, IT Technician, Speech Pathologists…Thank you all for the brilliant work that you. I’d like to make special mention of our Admin team in Tracy Allan and Rosemary Beake, who have both worked themselves to a standstill this term. Tracy has been our acting business manager since the end of last term. It never stops for them in the office. My sincere thanks to you both. Tracy is on leave from tomorrow afternoon- taking long overdue trip abroad. Bon voyage.
Our year 4s have school camp @ Jacobs Well Environmental Education Centre this week- 4/5H and 3/4O Monday/Tuesday and 4W tomorrow and Friday. Thanks to our attending teachers (Miss O’Dempsey, Mr Higgins, Ms Walters and pre-service teacher Miss Balmanno) and staff (Libby Elliott Haynes and Tony Pellow). I will be at camp with 4W tomorrow and Friday).
Dress up for Wildlife day- Thanks to Sam P in year 2 for giving bringing this idea to us. It was great to see the creative costumes today.
Please contact the office asap if your child/children are moving on from Buranda in 2023. We’ve had a good response for our prep enrolment (siblings- in catchment for next year) please contact admin if you’ve not enrolled your child yet for prep.
This Sunday is Burandafest- the P&C have worked incredibly hard to bring it to you. I hope you enjoy the day- see you on Sunday.
Next term we welcome Doreen Holland as our acting Business Manager. Doreen joins us from Cavendish Road SHS. We are looking forward to Doreen joining our team.
Finally, Kate Bryant and her partner Tom have passed on their sincere thanks for the silent support shown across the school community. Kate asked me to share the Mater-Little Miracles Foundation as a way being able to support others in similar circumstances.
Take care.
Have a great week.

PE
Four of our students, Anice, Eva, Darci and William recently competed as part of the Mt Gravatt District Athletics Team. It was a fabulous effort to by all four athletes to make the team and compete at such a high level. We are proud of way in which they represented Buranda State School. Congratulations!
In PE this term the children have been taking part in ball skills units ranging from Low Organisation Games, Ultimate Frisbee, Hockey and European Handball. Our three upper school classes are having a mini European Handball Tournament this Wednesday with six teams battling it out.
Design Technology
This semester the classes have been doing Design Technology when they come to the Resource Centre. Our Prep/1 classes are learning about farming and food technologies, year 1/2 classes are doing a unit on ‘Designing a Dream House’ and year 3/4 classes are learning about recycling, reducing and repurposing to design a bag out of old clothing. Our year 4/5/6 classes are ‘Planting a Pizza’ and learning all about food production, sustainable living and designing gardens. We had a Masterchef challenge a couple of weeks ago and the children’s knowledge of herbs and spices was impressive. We are working in conjunction with Mr Bryant to produce enough herbs etc to have a pizza cook up at the end of the year. Finally, our year 6 class are doing Digital Technology and using Spheros to code their way through a town that they will design.
Please remember cross country will be held Tuesday 13 September.

Firefighters
Last Thursday, 1/2S, 1/2K and 1B had a special visit from the firefighters.
The students learned important fire safety tips, and each had a blast using the fire truck's hose.
The fire fighters gave the students some homework:
- Learn their home address in case they need to call 000.
- Plan two ways to exit their home.
- Remember these two phrases: Get out and stay out & get down low and go go go!

Neurodiversity
Assemblies have been a little crowded the last few weeks, so our talks on Neurodiversity and the Mika Challenge have been a little rushed, cut short, or missed all together. This week however, I decided to volunteer to go first.
As part of our accepting and expecting neurodiversity within our community, we have been looking at the word ‘normal’. The children are realising that it’s ‘normal’ to be different.
We do however, come across some speedbumps, when expecting and accepting our differences. Meet ‘Mr Know it All’.
‘Mr Know it All’ tends to utter the following statements:
‘Oh, that’s easy!’ ‘I already knew that!’
‘That’s what I was going to say!’ ‘How could you not know that!’
‘You’re bad at this!’ ‘Come on ……. we did that yesterday!’
‘Finished’
‘Mr Know it All’ will often make other people feel bad about themselves. This behaviour however, is usually covering up an individual’s own insecurities.
We are learning that real strength comes from being vulnerable and being vulnerable shows real strength. We are learning that it’s OK to say,
‘I need some help.’
Congratulations to Violette F and Daisy W for their Mika Challenge entry. They were our first student challenge entry, and their performance was AWESOME!!!
BIG NEWS!!!!!!
The MIKA Challenge has been extended to include:
HOLIDAY MIKA CHALLENGES!!!!
Have a go! It’s lots of fun. Even the teachers are having a go!!!! Audio or video is fine, just challenge yourselves with the MIKA CHALLENGE!!!
P&C Update
Buranda Fest this Sunday!
We are super excited about Buranda Fest this Sunday.
If you are coming with your kids and haven’t yet volunteered, please speak to the stall operators on the day and help out for at least an hour. That still gives plenty of time to enjoy the fete and makes running it a lot easier.
Pre-paid all-day rides passes for the fete are available on Qkr! until 8pm tonight. They are $35 for the first sibling and $30 for other siblings. They can be collected from the information booth at the fete on Sunday.
If you miss the pre-paid option, you can still purchase ride passes at the fete. Passes purchased on the day are $40 for the first sibling and $35 for other siblings.
Remember to bring a keep-cup for coffee to the fete to help us reduce waste.
Please bring cash/coins on the day, as there is limited eftpos available.
You can find more information about the fete at this link.
We’ll send a special email with the program of class performances tomorrow.

Sushi Friday this week
This Friday (9 September) will be another Sushi Friday and you can order sushi on Qkr! until tonight, Wednesday 7 September by 8pm.
No sausage sizzle for cross-country
We held a successful sausage sizzle last week on the original date for cross-country, but we won’t hold another one for the new date for cross-country next week, as it is too soon after the fete and we need to give our volunteers a rest.
