Newsletter No. 26 - 24 August 2022
From the Principal
Hi everyone,
We have a few students participating in the Met East Track and Field Carnival tomorrow and Friday. Best of luck to you all.
Last night about 25 families attended the Cyber Safety and Reputation Management session with Rob Priddey from the Department of Education. I found the session engaging and practical. A copy of the presentation will be made available on our web page in the coming days. I will provide an email link. Three key points that stuck out last night were: children should not have devices in their bedrooms, 90% of the work Rob’s branch attend to is with students from years 6-9 & no software solution will replace your eyes. I hope you find the presentation notes useful when they are available.
Please be reminded that next Friday September 2 is a student free day. Care will be available through Helping Hands Network at Coorparoo State School if you require it. Please see registration information further in this newsletter from Helping Hands.
Have a great week.

Cross Country - Wed 31 August
Our Annual Cross Country is being held on Wednesday 31 August starting with year 4-6 classes from 9-10am, followed by Prep-3 classes from 10-11am. The children have been training regularly throughout this term in preparation for the run. Prep to Year 3 children will be running a track around the school. Year 4-6 children will be running a track along the river. Teachers will be spaced along the entire track in clear sight of each other. The children will run a lap of the oval, out the bottom gate and follow the school fence line along toward the Pocket Garden. The turnaround marker is in the park under Deshon Street. (Please complete the permission form that you received and return to the office asap. Year 4-6 only). If permission slips are not returned, students will run the course with the year 3 students within the school grounds.
At the completion of the race, all children will receive an iceblock and presentations will be done. Parents are welcome to join us for the morning to cheer our runners on.

Headlice Alert
Head lice have been detected in the school.
It is extremely important for you to check your child’s head for head lice and/or eggs TODAY. Keep checking every 2 days until there are no head lice found for 10 consecutive days.
If you do find head lice and/or eggs, commence effective treatment immediately and be sure to complete the process of treatment. This will help prevent head lice from spreading. Teachers will reduce head-to-head contact activities while head lice are known to be around.
If for any reason you are having difficulties treating the head lice on your child effectively, please contact the school on 3435 1222.
Road Safety Week
Road Safety week is Monday 22 - Friday 26 August 2022. This year's theme is "everyone has a role in keeping our roads safe".
We’re all getting busier and often multi-task to get through the day, even when using the road. It is especially important to be road safe around our schools and remind parents to:
- Put Road Safety first every day
- Follow school zone speed limits
- Obey parking signage, especially in drop off and pick up zones
- Never double park
- Obey the directions of school crossing supervisors at all times.
Please see link below for more details.

From the Forest
Sprinter has finally kicked off here in Bris, an interesting time somewhere between Spring and Winter. Cold nights still, but nice warm days too.
Lots has been happening here at the school. The students have been busy rinsing the mud off the river gravel we are using for the new frog ponds. They have worked hard and soon the ponds will be up and running.
Also, the students have been learning about our new recycling bins and what can and can not go in them. We will also be introducing a new composting program to redirect the fruit and vege scraps from the whole school community.
Lastly, we have planted a few hundred vegetable and herb seedlings, a potato patch and a bed of corn. All the birds are busy mating, hunting and nesting. The bees are busy in the sunny weather too. Happy days in the forest.

Helping Hands
Dear Families,
We are writing to inform you that unfortunately we have had to make the difficult decision to close for the Pupil Free Day at Helping Hands Buranda from the 2 September, 2022.
This decision has been made as the OSHC and Childcare sectors are currently experiencing widespread staffing shortages across the country. Outside School Hours Care services are legally required to maintain specific educator-to-child ratios and qualifications while these have always been a requirement, we are now experiencing greater difficulties in recruiting and finding relief staff when one of our team is on leave or unwell.
Any bookings that have already been made for this time will be removed and families will not be charged. For families who still require care during this time, the Pupil Free Day can be offered at the following nearby Helping Hands services:
- Helping Hands Coorparoo
Please log into Helping Hands website to enrol in Coorparoo or another suitable located service.
We are continuously working on recruiting to build our staffing team and ensure that we are able to provide care to all our families moving forward.
Helping Hands appreciate the support, understanding and patience of our families at this time.
Regards
Sarah Rough
Regional Services Manager
