Newsletter 25 - 9 August 2022
From the Principal
Hi everyone
As discussed at the last P&C meeting- the school newsletter will be sent each fortnight from today. The next newsletter will be sent on Wednesday 24 August. Please keep an eye on your emails from the school in the off-newsletter week for any important messages from the school/P&C.
Please remember that tomorrow is the Ekka Public Holiday-no school Wednesday 10 August.
From next week- we will be trialling recycling bins for students lunchbox waste. Myself and Mr Bryant will present activities to students about what items are recyclable from their lunchbox. Please consult the BCC website for a visual prompt around what we can recycle form our lunchboxes and talk about what is in your child’s lunchbox with them. If there is any doubt about what is recyclable just put it in the general waste bin.
I have had a number of class teachers ask me to remind families of the importance of having students arrive at school by 8:55am each day. Every minute counts.
Please remember to register for the parent Cyber Safety session on September 6 @ 6pm (see below):
The Department of Education's Cybersafety and Reputation Management team (CRM) advises, investigates and supports schools to manage online behaviours and digital reputation issues. Within this scope, the team draws on their diverse experience, including police investigation, policy, social media marketing, and recruitment, to deliver up-to-date informative sessions about positive social media use.
The CRM team will be visiting Buranda State School on Tuesday 6 September 2022 offering a parent and caregiver information session at 6pm. The session is an overview of cybersafety, trending platforms, online dos and don’ts, and useful settings to be aware of. This session goes for about 60 minutes, and will allow parents to ask questions throughout.
You can read more about the department’s cybersafety program and resources on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/QEDCybersafetyAdvice/
Please RSVP your attendance with the below links.

School Opinion Survey closes this Friday
Thank you to all of those who have already completed the Parent/Caregiver Survey. If you have not had a chance to complete the survey yet, please note that the online surveys will remain open until Friday, 12 August 2022. This is your opportunity to provide feedback about what our school does well and how we can improve.
To have your say, check your email for an invitation from the Department of Education titled School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022.
Can’t find your invitation? If your family has more than one parent/caregiver, check that they haven’t received the invitation and/or check your junk email folder.
Neurodiversity
Assembly was jam-packed with wonderful activities being shared by many of the classes last week, so Mrs Austin’s karaoke was once again deferred to a later date (Phew!).
Neurodiversity was discussed however, and the children were surprised to learn that many of the people they see in movies, read about, idolise in sport, watch on television, or listen to the songs of, are considered neurodiverse.
Ask your children about the following:
Which Harry Potter star has ADHD (Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder)?
Which famous sports star is considered to be Asperger’s?
Which Harry Potter star has dyspraxia?
Who is the popular singer with Tourette’s Syndrome?
Can you name the super hero with dyslexia, who gets criticized for his mistakes on social media?
The earworm has been a little quiet of late, so at this week’s assembly a special guest will anonymously demonstrate the way the 6 lines differ in the ‘Mika Diversity Challenge’.
There is no single ‘right’ way to do it, so get creative. The instrumental example from the original challenge wasn’t included in the last set of links, so I have included an instrumental compilation here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEgghEm_Twg
Payment for the Mika Diversity Challenge can now be made to the P&C via Qkr!
Entries can be emailed to Mrs. Austin: kxaus0@eq.edu.au. In your email please include the names of the participants, highlighting the student whose name the entry has been made in.
AGAIN… warm up those vocals, chat to your friends, learn the new lyrics, and prepare to HAVE A GO!
Remember our goal - for neurodiversity to become an expected and accepted part of Buranda’s community and culture.
