Newsletter 24 - 3 August 2022
From the Principal
Hi everyone
Through discussion with our P&C, I have been able to secure a parent information session with the Department of Education’s Cybersafety and Reputation Management Team, on Tuesday 6 September at 6pm. The session is open to all interested school parents. Please see full details and registration link below.
The Department of Education's Cybersafety and Reputation Management team (CRM) advises, investigates and supports schools to manage online behaviours and digital reputation issues. Within this scope, the team draws on their diverse experience, including police investigation, policy, social media marketing, and recruitment, to deliver up-to-date informative sessions about positive social media use.
The CRM team will be visiting Buranda State School on Tuesday 6 September 2022 offering a parent and caregiver information session at 6pm. The session is an overview of cybersafety, trending platforms, online dos and don’ts, and useful settings to be aware of. This session goes for about 60 minutes, and will allow parents to ask questions throughout.
You can read more about the department’s cybersafety program and resources on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/QEDCybersafetyAdvice/
Please RSVP your attendance with the below links.

Next Monday and Tuesday we have around 30 selected students competing in the Mt Gravatt District Track and Field competition at QSAC. These trials lead on to the Met East Championships. Good luck to all of our competitors.
The school has been contacted by residents in Salisbury St to report dangerous use of Salisbury St by parents for pick-up in the afternoons. Please do not use Salisbury Street for Vehicle drop-off or pick-up, doing so endangers children and other pedestrian users (including families form Narbethong). Vehicular pick-up is supervised from Martin Street. There is not adequate parking space available around the gate in Salisbury Street (it has been reported that some users park in the middle of the street). Thank you for your co-operation.
Please note, next Wednesday 10 August is the Ekka Public Holiday across Brisbane (no school next Wednesday).
There is a P&C meeting at 6:15pm tonight.
We have a vacant position for the afternoon cleaning shift, should you know of anyone currently looking for casual work. Please contact the office for further details.
Have a great week.

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day
Tomorrow, 4 August 2022, we celebrate ‘National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day,’ an opportunity recognise and support our first nations children at our school. On this day it is important that we share stories and learn about the impact of culture, family and community in the lives of every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child. This year’s theme for children’s day is ‘My Dreaming, My Future.’
“Every child is born into a story. That story comes form their families history and ancestral connections. The Dreaming. That child must then shape that story into their own. Through created opportunities, whilst finding their place within family, community, and society. Their Future.” SNAICC staff member
This Children’s Day, we are asking our children what Dreaming means to them, learning how they interpret this in their lives and identity, and hearing what their aspirations are for the future.
At Buranda State School we are grateful to have First Nations children at our school and their families as part of our community. Our curriculum and teaching includes the voice, stories, history, celebrations and games of First Nations people.
More information about National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day can be found on the website https://www.aboriginalchildrensday.com.au/ .

School Opinion Survey
Thank you to all of those who have already completed the Parent/Caregiver Survey. If you have not had a chance to complete the survey yet, please note that the online surveys will remain open until Friday, 12 August 2022. This is your opportunity to provide feedback about what our school does well and how we can improve.
To have your say, check your email for an invitation from the Department of Education titled School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022.
Can’t find your invitation? If your family has more than one parent/caregiver, check that they haven’t received the invitation and/or check your junk email folder.
P&C Update
Monthly P&C meeting today
The next P&C meeting will be held tonight, 3 August 2022, in the school library at 6.15pm.
The minutes of the last meeting and agenda for this meeting are available online at this link.
If you can’t attend in person, you can join online via this link.
Sushi Friday this week
This Friday (5 August) will be another Sushi Friday and you can order sushi on Qkr! until tonight, Wednesday 3 August by 8pm.
Helping with Sushi Fridays is a nice way to meet other parents and be involved in the school. You can sign up to volunteer in a week that suits you at this link. It only takes 1-2 hours in the morning (as the sushi is delivered pre-made and parents simply help package and distribute it).
We’re hiring a Tuckshop Convenor!
We are looking to hire a Tuckshop Convenor to run our school tuckshop each Friday during school term.
This is a paid position for up to 10 hours a week during school term. The position is paid according to the P&C Associations Award for Retail Manager (Level 1), which is currently $29.05/hr.
The position description is available at this link.
This position is parent-friendly and can be managed around school times. We would love to see a parent of a student at Buranda State School or a nearby school in the position.
If you are interested in applying for this position, please email the P&C President (E: president@burandasspandc.org.au).
First Friday Club – 5 August
Come and join other Buranda Families after school in Hanlon Park this Friday 5 August. The lovely team at Gabba Dance Studio will conduct a free yoga session too! See poster below for details.
Cardboard boxes
We are continuing our plan to use flattened cardboard boxes covered by mulch to reduce weeds in the school gardens near the Gladys Street gate (the gate from the bridge to Stones Corner).
If you have any spare cardboard boxes, especially big ones, at home, we’d love to have them. You can donate them in the area marked inside the Gladys Street gate.
