Newsletter 23 - 27 July 2022
From the Principal
Hi everyone
This week, we have had a number of staff and students away unwell. We thank you for your continued cooperation in keeping children at home if they are unwell. The school will contact parents to collect children who become unwell through the day- RATs will be provided to parents when collecting children from the sick bay.
This Friday, we have a number of staff attending a Philosophy in Schools professional development at Hillbrook College.
We have a vacant position for the afternoon cleaning shift, should you know of anyone currently looking for casual work. Please contact the office for further details.
A reminder that the next P&C meeting is next Wednesday 3 August at 6:15pm- a web link will be available too.
Have a great week.

School Opinion Survey
Thank you to all of those who have already completed the Parent/Caregiver Survey. If you have not had a chance to complete the survey yet, please note that the online surveys will remain open until Friday, 12 August 2022. This is your opportunity to provide feedback about what our school does well and how we can improve.
To have your say, check your email for an invitation from the Department of Education titled School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022.
Can’t find your invitation? If your family has more than one parent/caregiver, check that they haven’t received the invitation and/or check your junk email folder.
Diversity Challenge
The children were asked what an ‘earworm’ was today. Eva M was spot on when she said it was a song that gets into your head and you keep singing it over and over. Today Mrs Austin shared her earworm with everyone at Assembly.
The warm-up for karaoke happened this week, but many of the children were disappointed that, although dressed as a Rock Star, Mrs Austin didn’t follow through with the singing. Instead, she got her ‘friends’ Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell, to assist her. See their performance here:
Today the Buranda State School ‘Mika Diversity Challenge’ was introduced to help raise funds for comfortable outdoor furniture for ‘The Deck’. ‘The Deck’ is the area directly behind the staffroom. Over the past six months it has been spruced up, with Mr Doug finishing it off with the recoating of the floorboards and Mr Bryant making our brand-new sign. It is now almost ready to be opened up at lunchtimes for all those students who need some respite from the loud and busy playground.
More details regarding the ‘Mika Diversity Challenge’ are on the posters below (soon to be displayed around the school) and will be included in next week's newsletter. In the meantime, warm up those vocals, chat to your friends, learn the new lyrics, and prepare to HAVE A GO!
Here are some other links that will help feed that earworm. They include some instrumentals, so persevere:

P&C Update
Cardboard boxes
We plan to use flattened cardboard boxes covered by mulch to reduce weeds in the school gardens near the Gladys Street gate (the gate from the bridge to Stones Corner).
If you have any spare cardboard boxes, especially big ones, at home, we’d love to have them. You can donate them over the next few weeks in the area marked inside the Gladys Street gate.
Sushi Friday this week
A big thank you to the amazing volunteers who have come to help Sushi Fridays, even with cold, rainy weather. Your smiling faces set such a wonderful example for all our kids.
This Friday (29 July) will be another Sushi Friday and you can order sushi on Qkr! until Wednesday 27 July by 8pm.
Helping with Sushi Fridays is a nice way to meet other parents and be involved in the school. You can sign up to volunteer in a week that suits you at this link. It only takes 1-2 hours in the morning (as the sushi is delivered pre-made and parents simply help package and distribute it).
First Friday Club – 5 August
Come and join other Buranda Families after school in Hanlon Park on Friday 5 August. The lovely team at Gabba Dance Studio will conduct a free yoga session too! See poster below for details.
Class What’s App Groups
There is so much happening on the chat, don’t miss out. It will be a valuable communication tool as we prepare for the school fete (“Buranda Fest”) on 11 Sep, as each class will be given a stall to run! Please TEXT your parent rep and they’ll add you to the group.
