Newsletter 20 - 22 June 2022
From the Principal
Hi everyone,
We are almost at the end of a very busy term 2. Please check the calendar for the end of term activities- sports day, report cards and holiday dates.
We have had a very successful focus on minimising our rubbish around the school. I have used our assembly time together to talk to students about other changes we can implement to reduce the amount of waste we bring into the school. The school is significantly tidier with the introduction of our new bins and renewed energy for picking up a few pieces of rubbish daily (3 for the Sea). With our sports day on Friday, could I challenge students and families to not use crepe paper or plastic in streamers, pompoms and signs this year? The litter stays with us long after sports day.
Winter Solstice: Thank you to Chris and our P&C for organising a fantastic event on Saturday for the Winter Solstice. It was wonderful to see so many families here enjoying the evening together. Many thanks to all of our volunteers for making it a night to remember. It was a great way to finish the semester.
Philosothon: Congratulations to our students who attended Hillbrook College to participate in the Annual Philosothon- thanks to Mrs Alexion, Mrs Austin and Ms Santoro for their work in preparing the teams for the event.
Staffing: We welcome two new teachers to our team next term. In year 1/2K we welcome Kelly White, replacing Kate Bryant (maternity leave). We wish Kate and Tom all the very best for the birth of their first child. In year 4/5H we welcome Vincent Higgins, replacing Julia Hunt (extended sick leave). A special thank you to Cam Percy and Ann O’Brien for teaching 4/5 H at the back end of this term at short notice.
Mrs Wain held a Digital Technologies Expo in the hall for our students this morning. It was a fantastic showcase of our students’ learning this semester. The students thoroughly enjoyed the activities this morning. It has been a great introductory semester to digital technologies. Thank you to Mrs Wain and Miss Beake for their work with our students through the semester. Well done everybody!!
Thanks for your cooperation and support throughout the term. Thanks to our entire staff for their hard work, resilience and care this term. I’d also like to thank our regular relief staff for their help in keeping us going through the term. Students will return for term 3 on Monday 11 July.
I wish you all a restful and enjoyable mid-year break.

School Opinion Survey
The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted in Term 3 and will close on 12 August 2022. All families, school staff and students in target year levels (5, 6, 8 and 11) will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve.
An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 11 July. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
Parents/caregivers who do not have access to the internet at home are welcome to complete their survey online at the school. School computers/tablets will be available.
Philosothon
Congratulations to the two Buranda teams who participated in the annual Philosothon at Hillbrook College; Bonnie, Flyn, Darci, Marguerite, Sebastian R, Ferris, Joe, Jemima N and Archie M.
The students participated in a community of inquiry with students from ten other schools. They discussed: what makes a person, a person; what is hope and; what makes something art.
We hope the people who attended enjoyed the day as they turned it into a work of art. We have returned to school wondering who we are, what do we have hanging on our walls and we hope our thoughts sort themselves out soon.
Katherine Austin, Nadia Santoro and Desley Alexion
