Newsletter 10 30 March 2022
From the Principal
Dear Parents/Carers
Thanks to the outgoing P&C Executive and members for your time in volunteering for the 2021 year! The school relies on the support provided by the P&C in meeting the best quality educational outcomes for our students. The last 12 months have presented significant challenges for the community and the current executive has done a wonderful job in navigating through this time. My sincere thanks to Zoe, Sarah, Nicole, Kim, Trudy and the entire membership. Thanks also to Jodie (uniform shop), Maxine, Amy and all of the tuckshop volunteers. Thanks to Ludivine for being the ice-block legend too.
Full details of tonight’s AGM (5:30 for 6:15pm start) and meeting are provided further in the newsletter.
Please follow this Teams link if you are unable to attend tonight but would like to be involved online:
Master Planning process: I have been involved in numerous meetings so far around revisiting a Master Planning process for our school. Funding options are pending, the approval process will then allow for the Department of Education to provide consultation opportunities to the school community. Significantly, the old school buildings will be demolished on the Martin Street site. The removal of the buildings on site is a major step in building great new facilities for the school in the medium and longer term, to accommodate the projected enrolment growth. Demolition works will commence during the second week of May.
School refresh program- we have been successful in obtaining a grant to refresh the A block building- we will be able to repaint the exposed areas of the building with peeling paint & trim. The overall condition of the Heritage Listed building paint is quite good. It is hoped that by attending to the areas requiring repainting (trim, gutter and stairs), the building will not need full repainting for another 5 years.
The Outdoor Learning Area has been closed to due significant erosion caused by weather events over the summer. Due to the current situation with availability of trades- the restoration and upgrade work will take longer than planned. Rest assured, Mr Bryant will be able to offer alternative activities around the campus for our student in term 2.
Term 1 concludes this Friday. School will return after the Easter Break on Tuesday 19 April. I wish you all the best for the break with your family and friends.
Take care
Simon

From the Head of Curriculum
Hello Parents, Carers and Community members,
I was very fortunate on Monday to be able to attend the year 3/4 O & 4W excursion to participate in the First Contact Program with Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre, (MBEEC). Although it was a wet and rainy day the students took it in their stride to participate in some really engaging experiences and activities.
Our students had the opportunity to partake in translating local Indigenous words for places, food and objects. Demonstrating teamwork, cooperation and communication whilst completing various survival activities including designing and building bark huts and throwing spears to catch food. They also made string, shared stories and learned about native plants and food.
They connected with the early contact experience in Moreton Bay between Indigenous and European people and learnt the importance of Moreton Bay’s local cultural heritage.
We received an email commending our students on their behavior, team work and interest on the day. This is certainly a credit to our students and their wonderful families and teachers who support them every day. It was especially terrific to hear, as some of the original planned activities had been cancelled or modified due to the substantial rainfall and illness of MBEEC staff members.
“The Moreton Bay EEC team and I would like to congratulate your students on their team work, behaviour and enthusiasm. This is a credit to you and your school.” Jane Siddins, teacher MBEEC.
Fortunately, our students have been invited to return to experience the activities and experiences they missed due to the weather. Thank-you Year 3/4 O, 4W and our staff Miss Mullins, Ms Lee, and Miss O’Dempsey for sharing your bright students and the excursion with me.
Please check out some of the photos from the day.
Regards

New administration of medication guidelines
From term 2 there will be new guidelines regarding administration of medication for Queensland state schools to safely administer medication to students while they are at school or doing school-related activities.
All medications you provide for the school to administer to your child must be prescribed by a qualified health professional who is authorised to prescribe medications under the Health (Drugs and Poisons) Regulation 1996 (Qld) e.g. Doctor, dentist, optometrist.
Medication can only be given to a student when it is:
- accompanied by a completed Consent to administer medication form
- the medication is in its original container with an attached pharmacy label with packaging intact
Staff cannot give children non-prescribed medication such as cough medicine or paracetamol. Please do not send these medications to school.
Please see the office for further information.

Prep B
As part of our HASS unit this term, Prep B has been discussing special places that are familiar to us and suggesting ways we can care for a special, familiar place. We talked about how Buranda State School is a special place and how we need to care for it.
We decided we could care for it by walking around the school and picking up any rubbish we found. We were amazed by how much rubbish we found in the amphitheatre and the shade structure on the oval…two bags full! Most of this was plastic packaging, popper boxes and the clear plastic straw wrappers that go with them.
We talked about how close Buranda State School is to Norman Creek and how we do not want all of this rubbish to end up in the creek, then the Brisbane River into Moreton Bay and out to the ocean. The students ask us to please think about the lunch you bring to school and consider its packaging. You may want to only drink water at school rather than bringing poppers and Up and Go's which would save on a lot of the rubbish which we found. Please think about how you can help to reduce our school waste and care for this special place!
