Newsletter 7 9 March 2022
From the Principal
Hi everyone,
Thankfully, it is a more regular school week this week. Last week was a major disruption for so many people in our community. I hope that you are getting through the clean-ups. Our oval is very wet currently (and overgrown already). Students will not be able to play on it for a few more days, at least.
Queensland state schools will be operating under COVID normal conditions. I’d really like to thank all families for your ongoing cooperation with the term 1 COVID-19 situation. As a community, we have done a great job of minimising the impacts of COVID-19 infection. I fully understand the challenges of managing COVID-19 households (especially with children). Easing of restrictions are as follows:
- School assemblies, camps and excursions are now permitted.
- Restrictions on parents, carers and visitors to schools have now been eased.
- Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) staff and children who have symptoms of COVID-19 are now able to access RATs as a priority group

Students enjoyed their first assembly in the hall yesterday. Next Tuesday 15 March at 2:30pm we will hold our student and senior leader induction assembly. Badges will be presented to our seniors and our school leaders for 2022 (Jemima and George). Year 6 parents are invited to attend along with the families of our school leaders.
Crazy hair day is now scheduled for this Friday 11 March. This is to fundraise for year 6 student Darci, who is partaking in the Shave for a Cure initiative. Please have your child bring in a gold coin donation to support this cause. If you would like to contribute more than a gold coin, a QR code out the front of the classroom will take you to Darci's official sponsorship page.
Yesterday was International Women’s Day- students and staff celebrated the vital role that women play across our communities. There is a lovely selection of stories of women from our school on the notice board near the drink taps under A block. I hope you can take a look at them.
Have a great week
Best wishes

Connection
"...once again we are trying to settle into a learning pattern. routine and connection are our best ways of doing this. Being here, being ready, working with teachers and peers, all help to get us back into rhythm."
Mr Wade Haynes, Executive Principal, Brisbane State High School
The above quote from Wade Haynes was in the Brisbane State High News letter this week, and aptly sums up where we are at this point in time. Re-establishing routine is fairly self-explanatory, however connection, and what it means, is a little less straight-forward but is something we all need after such a disrupted start to the year.
Connection can be called many things, understanding, sensitivity, warmth or empathy. Regardless of what we call it, it is extremely important for all children, but particularly for those children who face challenges at school. These young people can easily feel isolated and may experience few positive and trusting relationships. Connection for these children not only promotes positive self-worth, but allows them to feel seen, heard, valued and safe.
For a healthy life, children and adults need to learn to comfortably rely on others for emotional support, guidance and connection. This connection helps us cope with the adjustments we have to make (there have been many of late), and helps with our general wellbeing.
Psychologist, Dr Justin Coulson, in his article ‘Connection’ https://www.happyfamilies.com.au/articles/connection talks about how transient connection is, and how it takes effort and intent to create and maintain connections with children. It’s worth a read if you have time.

From Helping Hands
Hello from Helping Hands Team,
Oh my goodness, it is nearly vacation time again, how did we get to week 7 already? This vacation includes three incursions, rock-climbing, hip-hop dancing, build a bear and an excursion to the Daisy Hill Koala sanctuary. Bookings for Vacation Care are now open and will fill up quickly, so get yours in. Bookings need to be made before school finishes so that I have some hope of staffing correctly and cancellations for holidays are on the seven days' notice not the 48hr notice that I constantly fight for. We will be cooking, crafting and sporting as much as possible with some cool themed days and of course, our usual activities at Vacation Care such as cubby creation and epic board games.

Online program to help families of children with eczema
Every day, thousands of Australian children suffer the effects of eczema, and families struggle with managing eczema and children’s behavioural and emotional adjustment.
Healthy Living Triple P is an adaptation of the successful Triple P - Positive Parenting Program, offering practical ideas and support for parents of children with eczema. This innovative online program is designed to help parents manage their child’s eczema more easily, help children cope with their eczema and emotions, prevent and manage difficult child behaviour, and reduce the impact of eczema on families.
Over the next few months, parents of 2-10 year old children with eczema are able to access Healthy Living Triple P free of charge as part of a research project through the Queensland Children’s Hospital, Griffith University, and the University of Queensland. For more information, please visit us at https://exp.psy.uq.edu.au/eczema/, contact Dr Amy Mitchell on (07) 3735 6462, or email healthyliving@uq.edu.au.
