Newsletter 10 November Week 6 Term 4
From the Principal
Hi everyone,
Congratulations to our Budgie Cup Cricket Teams for the outstanding performances last week. A senior and junior team made the major finals while our second junior team made the minor final. Our Junior Silver team won the Budgie Cup!! It has been a great year for our sporting teams in the Budgie Cup. Congratulations to our best and fairest winners Joe K, Joe C, Luka C and Hugo R. Go the Aussie men in the T20 World Cup tomorrow night!
I enjoyed chatting to a couple of our students and their parents at their Holland Park Junior Cricket Club game last Saturday (3 boys from Buranda playing in the same junior team). My boys were playing their HPJCC game at the same complex.
I highly recommend the junior cricket programs offered by Cricket Australia through local clubs, for all young children.
Thanks to the Federal Member for Griffith- Terri Butler for providing the school with new flags this week.
There is a P&C meeting in the library tonight- 6pm for 6:15 pm start. One of the agenda items will be discussion around the Wee Hurr Development application. Please see this link for further information about the plans being considered. Please see details further in the newsletter around an information session being offered by our Local Member- Amy McMahon.
I can mention that the Martin Street site refurbishment is on hold at the moment. The Department of Education are assessing the project options and will provide further details as soon as possible. This doesn’t impact on the current operation of the school in any way and will not provide any issues for the beginning of next year.
Finally, please let the administration team know if you are moving from the school in 2022. At this stage our enrolments are looking similar to 2021 with 11 classes.
Have a great week

Free Community BBQ
Event invitation: Free Community BBQ to look at Wee Hur Plans & O’Keefe St roundabout
Sunday 14 November, 4pm, new Hanlon Park playground
Come along and have your say on the future of the O’Keefe St roundabout and development on the Wee Hur site.
As many school families will know, we have faced the looming possibility of a massive transport orientated development (TOD) next to Buranda Train Station for more than a decade now.
The developer Wee Hur has just released its new development application for the site on the corners of Logan Rd, O’Keefe St and Gillingham St, which proposes:
* 4 towers (up to 28 storeys)
* 706 carparks
* 3 massive driveways
* no green space
* 1200+ new residents.
Two of the towers exceed the height limit set in the neighbourhood plan by 12-storeys or more. It will have a huge traffic impact on the area, which is already considered congested and dangerous, particularly the nearby roundabout and O’Keefe/Gillingham intersection.
The developers are asking for massive height increases under the guise of a transport-orientated-development. Yes these TODs are meant to rely on active and public transport — this development still includes a huge number of carparks, will make footpaths more dangerous, makes no concession to increasing cyclist safety and the developers have already told council they won’t contribute to upgrading the roundabout.
Last time there was poorly planned development proposed as part of this development, the Buranda community not only prevented it from going ahead, but the school secured additional land.
We can do it again, but we will need to come together, share information, and discuss next steps to ensure any development is safe and suitable for the neighbourhood. So, please come along for a free BBQ and a chat, organised by South Brisbane MP Amy MacMahon at 4pm on Sunday 14 November.
