Newsletter 3 November Week 5 Term 4
From the Principal
Hi everyone
Thank you all for your support of the Day For Daniel activity last Thursday. It was a really successful morning and it provided some great learning for our students. Through the combined efforts a whopping $652 was raised for the D4D Foundation. A very special thank you to Laura Klein for organising this event and running the activities for our students with their teachers. Bravo!
Please see information further in the newsletter from parent Sally Dillon re Wee Hurr development traffic impact concerns. It is worth your consideration. I will be meeting with a Department of Education officer shortly to discuss the matter further.
The P&C meeting has been postponed from tonight to next Wednesday 10 November.
You may have heard talk of snakes yesterday. There have been a few (non-venomous) snakes around the school this spring. Snakes are safely relocated nearby or left to find peace and quiet- without too much fanfare. We are usually dealing with Common Tree Snakes or Keelbacks (BOTH HARMLESS). On one rare occasion a few years ago we were visited by a Coastal Carpet Python. If we are unsure about the species we contact a snake catcher without delay- we also have the capacity to lock the school down if that is required (we have never had to do this)- whilst waiting for a snake catcher. Teachers regularly remind students what to do if they see a snake on school grounds- I am always impressed by how sensible our students are with this (MOVE AWAY CALMLY, TELL AN ADULT- TRY TO REMEMBER WHAT THE SNAKE LOOKED LIKE).
Have a great week

From Helping Hands
Hello from Helping Hands,
We will be celebrating Halloween this Friday 5 November. Dress ups are encouraged. There will be a huge scavenger hunt, black cat lucky dip and pizza for afternoon tea. Due to the public holiday last week and the fact that I was on holidays, we had to postpone Halloween. This means that we will be celebrating Halloween and Dwali on the same day. The children seem to think this is manageable, so I am going with it. So come and join in for an afternoon filled with fun and laughter.
Sue and the Team.

Free Community BBQ
Event invitation: Free Community BBQ to look at Wee Hur Plans & O’Keefe St roundabout
Sunday 14 November, 4pm, new Hanlon Park playground
Come along and have your say on the future of the O’Keefe St roundabout and development of the Wee Hur site.
As many school families will know, we have faced the looming possibility of a massive transport orientated development (TOD) next to Buranda Train Station for more than a decade now.
The developer Wee Hur has just released its new development application for the site on the corners of Logan Rd, O’Keefe St and Gillingham St, which proposes:
* 4 towers (up to 28 storeys)
* 706 carparks
* 3 massive driveways
* no green space
* 1200+ new residents.
Two of the towers exceed the height limit set in the neighbourhood plan by 12-storeys or more. It will have a huge traffic impact on the area, which is already considered congested and dangerous, particularly the nearby roundabout and O’Keefe/Gillingham intersection.
The developers are asking for massive height increases under the guise of a transport-orientated-development. Yes these TODs are meant to rely on active and public transport — this development still includes a huge number of carparks, will make footpaths more dangerous, makes no concession to increasing cyclist safety and the developers have already told council they won’t contribute to upgrading the roundabout.
Last time there was poorly planned development proposed as part of this development, the Buranda community not only prevented it from going ahead, but the school secured additional land.
We can do it again, but we will need to come together, share information, and discuss next steps to ensure any development is safe and suitable for the neighbourhood. So, please come along for a free BBQ and a chat, organised by South Brisbane MP Amy MacMahon at 4pm on Sunday 14 November.
