Newsletter 17 March 2021 - Week 8
Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We have had a few cases of school sores in the school. Please note students are to be excluded until 24 hours of appropriate antibiotics have been completed. Cover sores on exposed areas with a waterproof dressing until sores are dry, and encourage handwashing.
Can we ask parents to avoid using the staff car park when dropping off students late to school. Please use the drop and go zone on Martin Street.
Congratulation to Florence R, Tanina R and Joe C, who made the Mt Gravatt District AFL teams recently. We wish them all the best in the upcoming Met East Carnivals.
Wet weather has impeded the progress of our Outdoor Learning Area Project at the northern end of the campus. You are able to see the area taking shape. We are looking forward to being able to use the space in term 2.
Thanks again to all of our outgoing P&C executive. Last week a new Executive Team was voted in as below - The P&C are still looking for a secretary - no experience necessary. See further details in following pages.
As we were all reminded last week, it is vitally important to be mindful of COVID 19 safe practices- in our community. I ask you to limit visits to the school grounds to those that are necessary, practice appropriate personal hygiene and not gather at entry and exit points. It is also important that students leave the school grounds immediately at the end of the school day.
This week is Harmony Week – everyone belongs. As always, we are proud to celebrate diversity in our school community. https://www.harmony.gov.au/
The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (this Friday 19 March) is a day for schools, students and the community to say Bullying, no way! Teachers have a great range of resources to encourage discussion and activities with their classes. Please follow this link to family resources.
The final day of term 1 is Thursday 1 April.
Have a great week

Student absences processes
STUDENT ABSENCE
It is important that the school is informed if your child is away. Parents are responsible, not siblings, for advising the office of any student absences. The ways to inform the school are listed below:
- Text 0428 679 117, before 9am, with the date of absence, name, class and a brief reason for absence eg. sick or late due to appointment.
- Phone the office between 8.30 - 9am on 3435 1222.
- Email class techer/s as well as admin@burandass.eq.edu.au (This email address will go to all admin staff as well as Mr Vaseo).
UNEXPLAINED ABSENCES
The school will contact parents via SMS, as soon as practical on the day, if a student is not at school and we don't know why. If you receive a text message by the school that your child is away without a reason, please contact us as soon as possible by calling 3435 1222 or promptly replying to the text you receive from 0428 679 117. We will follow up with parents, if no response is received, via a letter from the Principal. Please complete and return the form to the office asap.
From the Head of Curriculum
Friday is World Sleep Day. It's a great time to highlight the importance of sleep for children's brain development and learning, and for everyone's optimal functioning.

The Sleep Health Foundation of Australia aims to improve people’s lives through better sleep. On their website they provide fact sheets containing information to support better sleep for everyone.
The fact sheets for children and babies are on the following topics and may be of interest to parents and the broader community.

German News
This year again, the year 5 and 6 students have been using Education Perfect, an online language learning program. It is a great learning tool which helps students to expand their knowledge of German vocabulary, spelling and sentence structure.
The first special event this year will be the Language Perfect World Championship from 16 - 23 March. So far almost 1 million students from 3 000 schools and 50+ countries have registered for the event.
It will be a great opportunity for our students to compare their skills across the school, the country and the world.

P&C Update
Hello, my name is Zoe Gill and I am your new P & C President for 2021 as voted at the AGM last week. Thank you to all who attended.
I would like to thank Sarah Warner for her lasting contribution as outgoing President and who has thankfully stayed on as Vice President to assist this year. Thanks also to Nicole Rayner, who has stayed on as our Treasurer this year. We literally could not function without you, and your contribution cannot be underestimated. Thank you also to Shannon Anthony, Michelle Manning and to Debra Venables, although you will no longer be part of the P&C executive, you will continue to remain key contributors to the P&C.
We still have an open position for P&C Correspondence Secretary (excluding Meeting Minutes - thanks Michelle!) and a Vice Treasurer role and we would love your support. Please get in touch if you are interested in being on the P&C this year.
Please note the P & C email is now: PandC@burandass.eq.edu.au
If you would like to join the P & C please follow this link, it is a great way to find out a bit more about the school and get to know your school community. See link below.
A little bit about me
For those of you I haven’t met, in my everyday life I am mum to Hugo and Posy, and day to day I work full time in a Senior Clinical role, in a federal agency, working with and for people with disability. I recently started doing yoga and I love supporting our local community.
This year my three goals as P & C President are;
- Working with the P&C Committee, ensuring all our systems support us operationally, which includes the Tuckshop and Uniform Shop;
- A focus on diversity and inclusion and how as a P & C we can best continue to support all students within our school community;
- Reigniting all previous events that were cancelled due to COVID 19, such as Movie Night, the Winter Solstice, as well as introducing some new events. Watch this space!
In the next newsletter, I will be posting all the potential dates for events as well as dates for all the P&C meetings this year, please look out for them.
Zoe Gill - P&C President
Tuckshop
You can order Tuckshop every Wednesday until 4pm. Please double check that the order has actually been placed by looking at the Activity tab on Qkr!

URGENT - We need volunteers!!
Although we have a lovely group of Mums who volunteer in the tuckshop whenever they can, to provide the best service for your children, we need more volunteers.
Volunteering is an opportunity to contribute to the school community while enjoying the social aspect that the tuckshop provides.
There's no weekly commitment, it's up to you how many hours of your time you would like to donate. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Sign-up on the roster here: https://signup.com/go/rqwpybE
Ice blocks
Ice blocks are every Thursday and can be ordered through the Qkr! app. New cards are to be collected from the tuckshop unless the children are in Prep - teachers will hold their cards. New cards must be purchased by 5pm on Tuesday. Please contact Ludivine if you have any issues. ludivinedr@hotmail.com
As always if you would like to get in touch please contact us at pandc@burandasspandc.org.au
