Newsletter 8 September Week 9 Term 3
Message from the Principal
Yesterday we held our Cross Country at school. It was a great day for the students, with high participation and spirited racing. Thanks to Mrs Wain and Groundsman Doug for preparing the course. Special thanks to our P&C volunteers who provided the sausage sizzle and ice-blocks. Congratulations to Socrates, who won the overall shield for the first time.
Maroon Outdoor Education Centre- our year 5/6 students attended school camp at Maroon Outdoor Education Centre last week. I cannot recall a more successful camp. Our 4 groups approached their challenges with maturity and showed great willingness to work together. Great guidance was provided by the centre staff- and students were well supported by our staff and volunteer parents. I am really proud of what our students achieved last week. A special thanks to parents Khanoum and Kevin and our teachers Mrs Alexion, Mrs Blanchfield, Miss Coutts and Miss Hunt for giving their week to the camp. I’m very grateful to MOEC for the wonderful experience provided to our students.
A reminder that our year 4s will attend their school camp on the last 2 days of this term at Jacobs Well Environmental Education Centre.
Teacher Aide Day- Last Friday was a student free day but it was also World Teacher Aide Day. I’d like to acknowledge the wonderful work of our teacher aides. We are very fortunate to have a dedicated group of teacher aides at Buranda. Teacher aides support our students and staff in so many valuable ways and we couldn’t operate successfully without them. Our teaching and admin staff provided a massive shared curry lunch to celebrate (last Friday) with our teacher aides.

Please note that the date change for Day for Daniel activities is now Thursday 28 Oct. Thanks to Laura Klein who is coordinating this for the P&C.
School Photos have arrived and will be sent home with your child today. Please look out for them in their bags.
Budgie Cup - This Friday is Budgie Cup Soccer at Coorparoo Secondary College for selected students. Student should arrive at school by 8:15am to receive their playing shirt and attend a briefing prior to departing for the train station. The soccer is always hotly contested amongst the Budgie Schools (Buranda, Dutton Park, Greenslopes and East Brisbane State Schools). Good luck to all of our students- play hard and play fair. Parents are welcome to attend if following COVID Safe guidelines (1.5m distancing or mask where you can’t, use the Check in Qld App found around the grounds- manual sign is available at the pop-up canteen). Games will commence after 9 am once all schools have arrived.
Naplan results for 2021 have been released to schools in the past week. I have included two graphs here showing the comparison of our school mean scale scores as compared to Queensland State Schools and Australian Schools. Our students have achieved great results across the testing suite this year. Individual student reports will be sent to families later this year.
Last but not least, we welcomed our acting Head of Department-Curriculum, Lauren Grayson, to Buranda SS this week. Lauren is replacing Rosie Scholl for the remainder of 2021. I look forward to continuing our work with the staff this semester.
Have a great week

Congratulations to the 129 Buranda students who completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge. This was a great effort. We expect to receive certificates from the Premier next term and will hold a pizza party and hand out the certificates in November. Until then, keep reading.
