Newsletter 28 July Week 3 Term 3
Message from the Principal
Hi everyone,
Thanks for your continued cooperation with COVID 19 arrangements on school grounds.
Could I remind families of the importance of having students at school on time to commence the learning day at 8:55am. Every minute counts.
As mentioned last week Dr Rosie Scholl will commence her temporary role with the Curriculum Teaching and Learning Team from next week. We wish Rosie all the best in this exciting opportunity. We will miss her immense input across the school. I am working with the Region to source a suitable acting Head of Department- Curriculum for the remainder of 2021.
We were informed of the sad passing of former Buranda State School student Luke Farrelly, last weekend. Luke and his brothers attended Buranda State School for their primary years. Luke's mother Ann O'Brien also taught at Buranda SS until recently. Luke had learned to live with significant health issues but was part of a loving a vibrant family and extended support network. His passing has come as a shock. Luke will be farewelled at a funeral service tomorrow.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Ann, Dan, Isaac and Nathan. A number of staff will attend the service tomorrow.
Have a great week.
Simon Vaseo - Principal
From the Head of Curriculum
As Mr Vaseo mentioned last week I have taken up a position with the Curriculum Teaching and Learning Team to work on the Respectful Relationships Education Program until the close of the 2021 school year. This is a short secondment and I am delighted to have the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to the Respectful Relationships Education Program. I hope to return to see the Year 6 students off at the end of the year, as I have enjoyed working closely with many of them in Philosophy this year. I look forward to returning to Buranda in 2022.
I hope you take this opportunity all welcome the new HOC and learn from them, too, as they get to know everything wonderful about Buranda State School.
Best wishes to everyone for the remainder of 2021.
You may also like to take a look at Maggie Dent’s website. Maggie has just released a new book, Parental as Anything, to add to her list of publications. The publication of the book is accompanied by podcasts. In this ABC podcast Maggie talks to parenting experts from around the world to find practical solutions to the challenges every parent is facing today. I hope you find it engaging and helpful.
Finally, I would like to draw your attention to the eSafety Commissioner’s Webinars for Parents and Carers. These live webinars explore the latest research and they are a great way to learn how you can help your child develop the skills to be safer online. All sessions are delivered by eSafety's expert education and training team.
Providing medication to the school
Before you provide the school with your child’s medication, check the expiry date to ensure it is in-date and there is enough for the agreed time period. It is also a good idea to take a note of the expiry date, put a reminder in your phone, so that you can replace the medication before it expires.
Please note, school staff will not administer medication that you can buy over-the-counter at chemists and supermarkets (e.g. paracetamol, eye drops, cough syrup) unless it has been prescribed by your child’s qualified health practitioner. For example, the school would administer paracetamol to a student only if it has been prescribed by their dentist to be taken for a short time after dental treatment.
School staff are bound by these regulations and we hope that all parents will acknowledge and cooperate with these rules.
From the Garden
In the school gardens this week, great work has been done by all. Some of our mosaic of little forests were lovingly watered and our vege beds made ready for planting. We watched our resident magpies nesting and welcome swallows catching their lunches on the wing. Beautiful.
