Newsletter 23 June Week 10 Term 2
Message from the Principal
Today was sports day, a great day was had by all. Thank you to our PE teacher, Mrs Wain and our staff for their hard work. Thank to the P&C committee for organising the BBQ and sweet stall. Special mention to Vivian, Trudy and Zoe for organising the food and to all the many volunteers and bakers that helped make this day a great success.
Term 2 ends this Friday, 25 June. School returns for term 3 on Monday 12 July. This has been a productive term for our students and we are looking forward to building on a great first semester in terms 3 and 4.
There will be various maintenance tasks carried out during the holidays, organised through Qbuild. Works to improve the soft-fall under the oval climbing equipment have been prioritised. The stairs at the F Block side of the amphitheatre will be replaced with a ramp. Works will also be carried out to replace the roof on the pool pump shed.
Thanks to our P&C for organising the Winter Solstice event on Saturday. It was well attended and an all-round success. Mr Bryant is very appreciative of the support with the work carried out too.
Buranda student, Peregrine has danced as one of the young princes in eight Queensland Ballet performances of The Sleeping Beauty at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC. The season finished on the weekend. Dr Scholl, Mrs Blanchfield and Mrs Alexion attended the final show on Saturday. This was a great opportunity for Peregrine and we are very proud of his achievements.

I shared the following article with our staff recently (building resilience in children). I found it interesting to read as a parent.
I am heading to far North Queensland with my family on the holidays to relax in the tropical winter sun, with the Cassowaries and Crocs. Enjoy the time with your family.
Regards,
Simon Vaseo - Principal

From the Inclusion Team
Parent Tip 9 from the Inclusion Team:
Point out the relationship between words.
Explain how related words have similar spellings and meanings.
Show how a word like ‘knowledge’ for example, relates to a word like know.
Examine words for ways in which they are different, alike, or related to each other. Understanding how words fit together helps your child expand their reading and writing knowledge.

From The HOC
If you are staying in Brisbane for the holidays the following ideas might help you plan some fun activities with your children.
The Brisbane City Council has a number of school holiday events.
The Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Children's Art Centre works with artists to create interactive installations, artist projects and activities for kids and families. Entry to the Children's Art Centre is free.
The Brisbane Kids website have collated a number of kids’ events which are on in Brisbane these school holidays and the best news is that most of them are FREE!
The mid-year holidays are a time for children to recharge, catch up on some sleep and down time, take advantage of the beautiful Brisbane winter days and enjoy being a kid. For those of you travelling away I hope you have a great adventure and bring back some interesting stories to share with classmates. Either way, I hope you all have a relaxing and safe holiday.

P&C Update
Winter Solstice
Well what a night that was! Truly amazing turn out, and such a lovely night celebrating our community. As discussed on the night, all profits raised (over $2,500!) will go towards assisting the school to pay for solar lighting across the campus.
As mentioned, we have so many people to thank!
Sprout Artisan Bakery
Thank you so much for the donation of those wonderful sweet and savoury pastries and those incredible take home banana breads and puddings. You made our event that extra bit special and we loved having you there!
If you are ever in James Street, or heading down to the Rocklea markets on a weekend, make sure you pop in and say hello to Lutz, Anne and the team at Sprout Artisan Bakery!
City Winery
Were you one of the lucky ones who got to try those beautiful Gerler wines donated by City Winery on the night?
Next time you are thinking of a venue for your next event, please keep in mind City Winery who has supported our school community! Thanks to Dave, Ben and the team for adding another spark to a wonderful evening!
Helping Hands Network
The Helping Hands Network donated $250 to ensure we had enough supplies to cook Trudy’s now Infamous Pumpkin Soup and Vivian’s Chilli Beans. This meant higher profits to contribute to the school community. Thank you so much for your support Priscilla, Sue and the team at Helping Hands.
Terri Butler MP
Member for Griffith Shadow Minister for Environment and Water
Terri was sitting in parliament and sent her apologies on the night, however her office was able to supply a $100 gift card and this helped the P&C supply sausages for the hot dogs and vegan options on the night.
$500 for solar lighting!
Amy McMahon, Greens MP for South Brisbane has donated $500 towards the solar lighting across the campus.
We appreciate Amy’s dedication to her local community and for helping out Buranda with this important safety project!
Thank You!
We couldn’t have run this successful event without the amazing contributions of the following people:
- Craig, Trudy and Vivian (organising crew)
- Mr Bryant (bonfire hero and leading the planting)
- The SilverBeats
- Sally and Michelle for working on selling raffle tickets
- Nicole, for organising petty cash floats, timely payments and handling on the night
- All the families who donated baked goods to sell on the night
- Beth, Ann, Michelle, Anna, James, Matt, Nic, and Nina who worked the crowds until we sold out of everything!
All the parents and friends who helped so quickly when we called out to pack down after the event. Some of us had been on campus since 10am, so your help was much needed and appreciated.
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY… You! Our community! To all of our families who came and helped with the working bee and then stayed on, who welcomed everyone and made it a night to remember, it was incredible!
We look forward to our next event!
Toilets for Hanlon Park
For those of you who recently signed the circulated Get Up and/or BCC petition/s for toilets in Hanlon Park, I received a personal email from Fiona Cunningham, Councillor for Coorparoo Ward last Friday as follow: “I am pleased to advise that we are close to a solution that will see a toilet block delivered in an appropriate location. I will share this with the community as soon as I can provide further details”.
Well done to all who contributed their signatures and I look forward to sharing further updates from Councillor Cunningham on the progress as the stages of Hanlon Park continue.

Helping Hands
Hello from Helping Hands team,
Just a gentle reminder to get your bookings in for Vacation Care before the end of this week. Once holidays start, you will not be able to book without calling to see if we will have enough staff. I will not be able to get staff quickly as holiday period is super busy at all the schools. Get your bookings in now so your child does not miss out. We have exciting excursions and lots of fun planned.
Many thanks,
Sue - Helping Hands Co-ordinator
