Newsletter 16 June Week 9 Term 2
Message from the Principal
Congratulations to our Budgie Cup students on a fantastic carnival on Friday. All four teams played exceptionally well- with all winning at least one game. Congratulations to our Junior Maroon team who made the major final and after a 2 all draw against Greenslopes, they were awarded the trophy on for an against margins. The cup is very hard to win in any sport- it’s a great result. Our two senior teams made the minor finals. I’d like to pass on that our students represented the school so very well throughout the day, I’m very proud of them all. Special thanks to all staff who attended- Mrs Wain, Mrs Hunt, Ms Matheson (x2). Thanks to Mr Doug for his set up and finally thanks to parents Nina and Craig for helping with pack up at the end of the day.
Last week 3 Buranda students attended the State AFL Carnival in Cairns. Florence, Tanina and Joe represented Metropolitan East (u12) and Metropolitan North (U11). The girls team came third overall with Joe’s team finishing 7 out of 12. This is a wonderful achievement for the 3 Buranda students to make the State Carnival in the same year. We are exceptionally proud of you. Well done.
Next Wednesday is Sports Day- parents are welcome to attend but please follow social distancing protocols. There will be QR codes to check in on also. If you have any cold or flu-like symptoms, please do not enter the school grounds.
The program of events is available in last week’s newsletter. There will be a limited tuckshop in operation too. Please see further details with this newsletter.
Parent teacher interviews are next week in most cases. Please be reminded that these interviews are to discuss your child’s academic progress. Report cards will be emailed out to families on Friday 18 June.
On Monday we were visited by our Assistant Regional Director, Hugh Goodfellow. We visited a number of classrooms and the leadership team met with Hugh to discuss our school improvement focus for term 3.
Our staffroom was broken into on Saturday afternoon. A number of windows were damaged but there was nothing of value taken. Thankfully our alarm system did the job of alerting the authorities.
Have a great week.

Parent Tip 8 from the Inclusion Team:
Play word games.
Have your child sound out the word as you change it from mat to fat to sat; from sat to sag to sap; and from sap to sip.
Emphasise the different vowel sounds as this is one area children have difficulty with when transitioning from reading to writing.

From HOC
As you read the following quote, try to guess who might have said it. What era do you think it was from?
“The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.”
I won’t reveal the author but you can google it. It is worthwhile reflecting on how adults generalise about children’s manners and the behaviours we expect from children, without remembering that at one point we had to learn these lessons, too.
On Monday when Hugh Goodfellow (ARD) visited we were discussing the newsletter this week and the ideas that emerged included empathy, manners, acknowledgement and gratitude. These are all behaviours that we are here to help the children learn. Every time the tyrant appears, butting into adult conversations, forgetting to clean up their messes, gobbling up their food, expressing desires for luxuries, we can view it as an opportunity to help our children gently learn these lessons and become the best versions of themselves. We can be the adults we needed when we were younger. When we reflect on empathy, manners, acknowledgement and gratitude ourselves most of us would recognise times we could still improve at them.
Hugh mentioned The Resilience Project, so I bring it to your attention here. The mission of the Resilience Project is to teach positive mental health strategies to help people become happier and more resilient. They focus on three key pillars proven to cultivate positive emotion; Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM).
They have a page within their website specifically devoted to TRP@HOME which has useful ideas for parents and carers at home to help you work with your children on gratitude, empathy, mindfulness and emotional literacy.
When we hear children using lovely manners, saying good morning, and being truly grateful for what they have, we need to positively reinforce those behaviours and thank them for their lovely manners. Make gratitude and good manners contagious. Let people, especially children, know you noticed what they did right and that their efforts are appreciated.
