Newsletter 2 June - Week 7 Term 2
From the Principal
Hi everyone
At the end of last week, we received news that a former student of Buranda State School died in a tragic accident. Max McDowall (aged 20), was a student here with us during his primary years (he was later joined at BSS by his sisters). Max was an outstanding young person in every sense. He was kind, intelligent hard working, humorous and a great sport. This news has come as a great shock to us. The McDowall children all attended Cavendish Road State High School, after leaving Buranda. It is an extremely sad time for both school communities. I offer my deepest condolences to Karin, Rob, Helena and Vivienne at this terrible time of loss. Max will be fondly remembered by everyone who knew him.
I will return to school tomorrow after 3 days away on a school review in the Gympie Region. Many thanks to the leadership and administration team for managing the front end of the week.
There is a P&C meeting in the library tonight.
All the best

Parent Tip 6
When your child has sounded out an unfamiliar word, have him or her re-read that sentence. Often kids are so busy figuring out a word they lose the meaning of what they’ve just read.
Sports Day
Our Annual Sports Day is approaching and will be held on Wednesday 23rd June. Children began preparing in PE classes this week and will be practising both field and track events. Our field events will be held on Tuesday 22nd June for selected children.
Our house groups are Aristotle (blue), Plato (green) and Socrates (Yellow). The children are asked to wear a t-shirt in their sports house colour on the day with their school shorts and hat. Coloured ribbons in hair and coloured zinc are also allowed.
Further information will follow in the coming weeks regarding the daily program and tuckshop available on the day.
From the Garden
At the time of writing, it is officially the first day of Winter. I awoke under a big moon in the dead of night to one of the most beautiful, cold, crystal clear skies I’ve ever seen or felt. Amazing. Nature never fails to impress me.
This week and last we continued the weeding of the Fairy Wren Forest. What a mission! I’m glad to say we all helped to rid the school of a few big loads of invasive Cat’s Claw, Cobbler’s Pegs and other highly invasive species. We even got to plant a few new little darlings. Gemma, Sam and Jack put in some new Kangaroo Grass and others put in a couple of Italian Lavenders.
The Winter Solstice now calls, I can’t wait to light a fire this year. I didn’t have the heart to last year after the tragic fire season of 2019/2020. The final jobs in the garden makeover are just about done and things are looking excellent. We’ll be in there soon. Happy Winter!

Toilets for Hanlon Park
It would mean a lot to the community if you added your name to support this issue because: Families and children and the broader community should not have to cross the main road to facilitate their child or person they are assisting to access adequate public facilities. Toilets are crucial to this park being accessed in a meaningful way by all community members!
After you've signed, please also take a moment to share it with others. It's super easy: post it on Facebook, tweet about it, or you could simply forward this email onto more friends and family.
Real change happens when everyday people like you and I come together and stand up for what we believe in. Together we can reach heaps of people and help create change around this important issue.
Thank you!
Zoe Gill
